  1. Andy, Email address is blatchat@charleselliott.co.uk. Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  2. Andy, I'd be very interested in pictures as well, and where you got the bits from. Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  3. Now back up - with some pictures from the Academy meeting at Goodwood. Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  4. Thanks Tricky! It seems that Machine Mart are back in stock of their 110mm jack anyway though, so I'm going for that one just in case I ever want to put better tyres on the car and it drops a lot! [my site is down at the moment - girlfriend turned the PC off] Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  5. Have you seen here: http://www.cfsnet.co.uk/acatalog/CFS_Catalogue_Sikaflex_221_160.html ? Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  6. Red Dave, It will cover a lot - from Darren's site here, the only > 100 Nm setting is for the hub nuts. Unfortunately, this needs 271 Nm or 200 lb/ft of torque so you won't cover that one. However, there are quite a few less than 30 lb/ft so you'll either need to guess or buy another wrench to cover the smaller values. 7. Not really serious about the 200 lb/ft wrench - if I can't borrow one, then I can just wait for the post build check. However, a 41mm socket so that I can at least do up the hubs would be useful. The Draper one is 3/4" drive which would mean a convertor. red dave: This is the jack that I was looking at - unfortunately it suddenly seems to be out of stock everywhere, including my local store. Can anyone confirm the ground clearance of a Caterham at the jacking point? What is the minimum height I need for a jack? Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  8. Tempted - and I can't find it cheaper. Not really needed, but what a great excuse for creating a really good toolkit! Now, where can I get a 41mm socket and a 200lb/ft torque wrench from...... Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  9. Looking at Darren's site, the only torques the Britool won't cover are: Steering rack clamps (11), steering column clamp (14), expansion tank bracket (11), bellcrank to link (14) and rear ARB clamp (7). If I can find a inexpensive/semi-decent low value wrench I might get it - otherwise I think it's just a 'by feel job'. Nothing here looks that vital (except bellcrank to link and ARB perhaps?). Any suggestions? 14cm sounds pretty high to me - that's why I was a bit concerned. A quick measure of the Boxster over the weekend suggested that it is around 14 cm - and I'd assumed a 7 would be lower. Are you supposed to store torque wrenches on the lowest torque setting, or 'below' the lowest setting (i.e. off the scale past minimum)? Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  10. Will any hydraulic jack do, or do you need one with a special 'low' minimum height. Halfrauds ones seem to have a minimum of around 13-14 cm. Is this low enough to get under a 7? Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  11. Do they? I've seen 20% off tool chests, but not tools. I'll have to check.....
  12. I'm gradually putting together/updating my tools for my Academy car build. Any particular socket set that people can recommend? I'd rather buy higher quality with fewer pieces, but the build manual doesn't appear very specific on what is needed. 1/2" drive? 3/8" drive? Both? Halfords? Machine Mart? My torque wrench is 1/2" drive. If I need to torque up smaller bolts, is it fine to just use a convertor or is there some calculation needed as well to adjust the value? Is it worth getting a torque wrench that goes Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  13. Britool arrived today. Came in a very impressive red box with it's own calibration certificate. No idea if it's actually any good, but it looks great! Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  14. 7HeavenSoon: Personally, I'll go for the Britool. I'm getting a 2004 Academy car (1.6). Interesting that you have your build manual already, as I've been quoted September for my delivery and am expecting my second deposit letter in the next week or so. When/how did you get your manual? Tony C: Absolutely agree with you, but how easy is it to check a wrench? If I had access to a calibrator, I would have no problem in buying the cheapest wrench available and testing it. 15. I'm so sad that I don't yet have a build manual to refer to 😬 - I'm was going on the 5 to 60 lb ft in the original post. Would I need a wider range than this is general (rear hubs excepted). Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  16. Strange....Britool has just reappeared at £39.99 - a £103.40 discount http://www.tooled-up.com/Product.asp?PID=92121 Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
  17. I'm in the same position - looking to get some tools and trying to only buy once . Is this the AK224? tooled-up.com was selling the Britool ECT100 for £60 yesterday but it seems to be back to £140 this afternoon. (My girlfriend has just pointed out how sad I am) Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary

  20. Phil, You have mail. I can well understand TSK not wanting to paint new cars - I'm really just trying to work out whether getting it painted elsewhere makes any financial sense when compared with the £800 upwards that Caterham charge. Charles
  21. I've currently got a car ordered unpainted and whilst I love the aluminium look I'm still thinking about the painting options. Obviously Caterham is one such option. Are there any noticeably cheaper alternatives? I would have thought that it's pretty easy to paint a brand new chassis/body before it's assembled - anyone used someone in the Caterham/Surrey area to do this? What sort of cost would I be looking at? Cheers, Charles
