    slave cylinder

If it's still in the car try pushing the clutch pedal 😬 😬. Brian
  2. Hi Andy, my experience is only with the early 15/16/17ACR alternators , but you are right to assume that the casings can be easily re-aligned. What you must ensure is that the stator remains in alignment with the rear case as there are wires passing through the casting to the rectifier. Brian.
  3. My 90 spec De-Dion has the battery mounted infront of the drivers footwell. As I'm running a twincam and cannot therefore remove the inlet manifold as per Caterham's instructions 😬to allow access, I rivetted a plate between the side tube and engine bay lower tube and then bolted the standard tray to that. To get the battery out now I just have to disconnect the clutch cable at the gearbox, release the battery from the tray and then unbolt the tray.......and drop the whole lot onto the garage floor! . I did try the battery in the boot but the extra weight proved too much for the thin ally flanges that the front board sits on Brian.
  4. Guilty as charged Kenny and yes I've still got the +2..just needs the handbrake adjusting before it goes in for the MOT Brian.
  5. Hi Kenny ,as you suggest it is possible to convert the cooling system to a sealed one by fitting a blanking cap onto the thermostat housing and plumbing in an expansion tank via the original overflow pipe. I have run just that system for 18 years on my twincam with no problems. Brian. BTW did the +2 go to a good home??
  6. The larger triumph discs are 1/2inch thick. Brian.
  7. Working on the assumption that you currently have the 9 inch spitfire disc fitted then yes the larger disc will be a direct replacement. You will probably find that the hubs you have fitted to your car were made for Lotus with the Ford pcd to allow the same wheel fitment at both ends of the car , much as Caterham do to this day.If you have access to a Ford fitment type 16 caliper you may find that it bolts onto your current mounting bracket ... Brian.
  8. The easiest way to fit larger brakes to your uprights will be to use the triumph Vitesse/GT6 9.7 inch diameter discs and matching PB16 calipers and mounting brackets that should be direct replacement for your original items, not forgetting to check for clearance within the wheels... 😬 Brian.

    VDO fuel guage

Are you sure that your gauge was originally damped? My 1990 fuel gauge certainly isn't,unlike the oil pressure gauge which moves with the speed of a snail Brian.
  10. I don't know about the larger zetec engines ,but the 1250cc fiesta zetec s has neither! The pulley is held purely by the clamping pressure of the retaining bolt... Cheers, Brian.

    Lower wishbones

According to my 1990 build manual the track rod ends of a car fitted with negative camber wishbones are screwed on by two fewer turns than standard. Steering arm thread has a pitch of 20 tpi , which suggests the lower trunnion mounting bolt hole will have been drilled approx. 1/8 inch further out ,which is probably not easy to see when comparing the two! 😬 😬 😬
  12. Dave,my '90 spec de-dion car (original style top link plus bolted on half wishbone..that lasted less than a year before Caterham designed a proper top wishbone..)uses two Y16's and a spacer in the front lower wishbone pivots and uses a 1/2" bolt ,much as Chris stated above .Is it possible that the original spindle has been damaged, cut flush to the chassis, drilled&tapped?? *eek* hence the use of a smaller diameter bolt... Brian.
  13. Did this for one of the neighbours just recently.Take your chassis number with you when you go to the dealers 'cos I was given a choice of three different switches(none actually in stock...)for the year of manufacture .... we chose the 'most common one'..which turned out to be the wrong one Brian.
  14. Mark , 2.8 injection discs have a larger centre hole, require re-drilling to mount on the hubs and then the steering arms need spacing out to stop the track rod end boots rubbing.....oh and you also have to space the caliper away from it's mount ...unless you want to machine the hub, first checking for caliper clearance against the rear of the wheel mounting flange.....apart from that.....they fit! 😬 Brian.
  15. Changed the cambelt on the runaround a few weeks ago. You may be interested to learn that the Fiesta zetec(1250) engine has no keys or pins etc for any of the belt pulleys. It relys soley on the bolt clamping pressure to transfer the drive, so I guess Ford have no issues with this way of doing things. Brian.
  16. Hi Dave,as above for maincaps etc., BUT be aware that the width between the engine montings on the pre-711 blocks is narrower. If fitting into a Seven you will require a Twincam N/S engine mounting bracket if CC can/will still supply.. Brian. It would also be worth checking to see if the block has the rear dipstick hole as early cortinas had the dipstick in the timing chain cover which would render it inacessible in a seven 😳 Edited by - ncm on 18 Oct 2007 14:48:53
  17. Guy, according to the 64 page product breakdown report that came in one of the boxes that I collected in 1990 , part number for de-dion tube-1990 spec. is 79018. Have you found out why your tube has broken? Have you seen evidence of contact between the tube & lower chassis rail? I ask because I have a pair of new spax rear shocks of allegedly correct specification that were too long and required shortening to stop the tube fouling on the lower rails. Brian.
  18. Block height for a 1600 block is listed as 211.48 to211.61mm.This is for an earlier block than that which you have however ,as far as I am aware ,the machining dimensions were not altered over the years that the engine was in production. If you have to throw the block away, would you throw it in my direction? 😬 Brian.

Hi Les , have just sent you my e-mail address for the photos. Cheers , Brian.

    Prisoner Alloys

Hi, do these wheels fit the de-dion cars(Ford pcd)? Would you send pictures....I'm at work right now so will have to wait until tomorrow to look at them! Do you have a figure in mind for price? Cheers, Brian.
  21. There is a casting mark around the area of the valve springs that identifies the head. 1300 is marked 33 , 1600 is 37. According to Mr Haynes the mk11 escort 1600 used larger valves than the 1300.....the 1600 mk11 cortina engine apparently used the same size valves as the 1300 escort(haynes again) but you may find that the early head has a small combustion chamber. Why do you need the smaller valves? Cheers, Brian.

    engine mounts

Caterham used to sell an engine mount 'saver'? which bolts over the original mount to restrict it's movement. By 'used to' I mean way back in the distant past....1990! Cheers, Brian.
  23. Nick, Have you unbolted the brake caliper and left it's frame in situ? You have to remove the frame as it surrounds the brake disc. Pull the shaft out by the can section that is adjacent to the diff . Cheers , Brian.
  24. I would expect a pro engine rebuilder to insist on replacing con rod bolts and suggest replacement of the block core plugs, especially the one that hides behind the flywheel and therefore cannot be replaced in the car.... Brian.
