Speedtrip
Being a newbie with a 2017 car is this something I need to be aware of or has the issue been resolved? If not could someone please summarise to problem? Thanks in advance,Andy
Ian B
Andy, no, I think those particular issues being experienced were resolved from "version 7" onwards in 2004, so a 2017 car won't be affected.

Guy Lowe
This was my short buttress tube failure (No: 25 in the opening post). Replaced with a HD 10 gauge tube P/No: 79016. No problems since and now running 200bhp
Area Representative Nick Bassett Posted December 12, 2018 Area Representative Share Posted December 12, 2018 A BTTT for this thread.Embarrassingly, this is the first time I can recall reading about DD tube failures.Mine is a 2000 SL-R so type 3 DD tube - will be giving it a good look over this Winter, but given previous owners experience - one failing immediately after an MoT when all looked well, I do wonder if I should budget for a replacement some point soon to be completely reassured?B*gger. Bricol
Mine is closely inspected every little while - I've welded one up on someone-elses car in an Italian hotel car park a number of years ago so I've seen what they start off like. But my 50,000 mile, 17 yr old one is still looking okay. Robin Ford
Brian, that was my tube that you welded in the car park in Avigliana in 2009 so thank you again for that It was good enough to get me safely back to the UK where of course I had it replaced immediately for whatever was the latest type at the timeRobin

Ian B
BTTT for anyone looking at buying an older car, or doing their winter check.I'm afraid the formatting and links were lost when it was transferred to this new webshite, but if you scroll down you'll find an attempt at reformatting it, but still with no working links I'm afraid. Wrightpayne
Thanks Ian - good reminder for us all to check!
anthonym
Hat off to your reformatting Ian. I've done a couple of my much shorter, but long, ones and thus I know it takes ages. I view your post here as possibly having saved my life given the mountain terrain in which I always drive. One metre off the road is a deadly cliff, typically. So here is my request to the Team to allow the old site to be put back online, like it was for some time (read only) , so we can rescue valuable and/or valued content that often represents vast amounts of time invested over sometimes many years for the benefit of fellow members and now currently all lost to us... despite all the promises. This thread being one such outstanding example. There is a deep irony in Drupal (this site uses it) being a content MANAGEMENT system, given the extensive so far irretrievable damage it has occasioned to our archive of knowledge and wisdom.I am aware several of us have offered the online resources to support this, which is the only reason I have been given for not allowing this self- help tool. Broken links may be fixable too.Anthony
Wrightpayne
This is the thread that convinced me to change my dedion to the later uprated version and I’m forever grateful to Ian for his openness and collating everything.Ian
anthonym
Perhaps it should be a sticky, if not all year then at the start of each Winter.Winter has arrived here :-) I've had two DD tubes replaced based on the info in this thread.
Guy Lowe
Back to the top, it would be a shame to let all the good work Ian B did on this important subject go to waste and as AnthonyM # 218 says, this is the time of year to check your tubes. Unfortunately most of the links & images were lost with the change over, but this is what can go wrong . . . . .
Baggiebird
I noticed that Caterham now list a 'race spec' strengthened de-dion tube. Is that fairly new, states 2021 anyway? Presumably will fit post 1996 cars?https://caterhamparts.co.uk/de-dion-tube/7599-de-dion-tube-s3-race.html?search_query=370R0003A&results=
