Diff removal and refitting

I'm thinking about the LSD bulk buy currently being organised but am a bit wary being a complete novice when it comes to taking things apart etc.

Is it a relatively simple job to remove and refit the differential in a de dion 7? i.e bolt off. bolt back on again

I bought the car already built and have a build manual which seems to explain things but assumes you are building from scratch.

Would I need to invest in any specialist tools etc?

Also, does anybody have an idea of the weight of a differential as I'd like to get some idea of cost of postage before I commit to BB.

Thanks for any answers.

Adam it's about a 2 hour job to remove a diff, less if you've done it before.

It probably helps if you have two people around as they aren't light, I could be wrong but I think a Sierra LSD is going to weigh 20-25kgs

There's an techtalk article somewhere with instructions on how to remote the diff somewere but basically you need to undo the dedion ears and pull the complete ear/brake/hub/driveshaft assembly out on each side, then undo the propshaft bolts (that's the tricky bit!) and then the 3 diff bolts (making sure to make a note of how many washers are fitted on each side).

It's not hard but the diff bolts are a usually a pain to get out and back in again.

Depending on where you are I'm sure there are people around who could lend a hand.

Cheers

Thank guys, very useful indeed.

I'll go and get a few quotes for shipping to and from Quaife and if not too expensive, put my name on BB list.

Budgets pretty tight and it's either LSD or new set of 13" wheels and tyres to replace 16"'s

Badoing!

here

This was written from the perspective of a propshaft replacement - but getting the diff out was a necessary step.

It was the first major bit of work I did to the car - and I did it on my own, outside, in the snow with only blatchat advice as assistance. It took me the whole day to complete the job, but that was mostly down to my lack of experience at the time and the delays caused by the weather.

FWIW, I would *not* recommend doing it on your own - or at least, not without some careful preparation. The diff is s*dding heavy and can be a complete pig to raise to the right height safely and then to get the bolts and washers into place - this was, without doubt, the most dangerous bit of maintenance I've performed.

If your boot floor is removeable - and you have access to a crane - it has been suggested that it is a hell of a lot easier and safer to drop the diff in from above...

  • 7 years later...

Finally took the plunge and had a go at removing the diff single-handed today. Only needed to remove one drive shaft to drop the diff downwards. Very surprised to get it out in 1h 45m !! Even more surprised to get it back in the same day in a couple of hours.

Something tells me I am going to know I have done it in a day or two !!
