theslowman
Hi,I am mid way through the first oil change on my newly built Caterham 420.I have been changing oil filters on cars for nearly 40 yrs without any significant issues but removing the oil filter is proving to be beyond the conventional tools that I have. The filter just will not budge.Presumably it was installed in the factory without lubricating the seal and has simply stuck on.Any bright ideas of the best tool or tips to remove it would be very much appreciated.I suppose I am off shopping in the morning....TIARegardsP
7 wonders of the world
Band wrench will do the job something like this stilehttps://www.sealey.co.uk/product/5637179432/oil-filter-band-wrench-o89-98mm-capacity
Member Jonathan Kay Posted May 1, 2022 Member Share Posted May 1, 2022 As above. But if it's a metal can type you can also transfix it with a screwdriver and then use that as a lever.Jonathan
ScottR400D
#2 That's what I use and it's never been a problem. A chain type would be just as good but I'm guessing you have one or other? I would suggest you fit the wrench with the handle in a position where you can either get a pipe on it or, probably easier, tap it firmly with a hammer to break the seal. If you've a dry sump don't forget to pull the finger filter, there's a lot of oil in there, and be gentle on the M5 cap head.
theslowman
I have (had) a band type filter remover. It has provided years, probably decades of service but I have bent it trying to remove the filter in question. This type of tool seems to get good reviews and I can get one in the morning, unless somebody on here knows better....Phttps://www.halfords.com/tools/hand-tools/pliers-and-wrenches/halfords-oil-filter-pliers-300mm-12in-289967.html?cm_mmc=Google+PLA-_-Tools%3EHand+Tools%3EPliers+and+Wrenches-_-Tools%3EHand+Tools%3EPliers+&+Wrenches-_-289967&istCompanyId=b8708c57-7a02-4cf6-b2c0-dc36b54a327e&istFeedId=62b447cf-331e-4fec-a47a-9985ff72d404&istItemId=riwaw&istBid=tzlq&_$ja=tsid:94971|cid:298204272|agid:1277632583262848|tid:pla-4583451667049959|crid:|nw:s|rnd:|dvc:c|adp:|mt:e|loc:&msclkid=c613fb77101d12d8781f99181071a0c3&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=PLA%20-%20W%20-%20Workshop&utm_term=4583451667049959&utm_content=W%20-%20Tools%20-%20Hand%20Tools

aerobod - near CYYC
I would say it is best to use the proper tool to remove the filter, as opposed to a generic one, if it is very tight. I don't currently use the UFI filter (I use a Ford Focus compatible filter that has a bit higher capacity, but otherwise the same characteristics).I think this is the right tool for a 12-flute 76mm diameter UFI filter: https://www.sd-tec.de/en/item-1-412801006.htmlUsing that type of filter wrench also allows torquing, I tighten my filter to 15Nm. colindavies56
Wait until oil is cold, now try it, once you've cracked it open just nip it back up while you warm the oil up,then try again.
SM25T
Big pair of pipe fitting pliers with a sliding pivot and long handles. Leverage is your friend. Crack it with oil cold.
theslowman
UPDATE.I bought a set of Halfords Oil Filter Pliers, ate a lot of Weetabix and only just managed it.It took all my strength and weight to undo it, the force was not required just to break the seal, it took lots of force for the first few turns.Stupidly tight. But done. ScottR400D
How did you find the pliers to use? Can you get access easily with them?
theslowman
I tried to push the pliers with a bit of tube slipped over the handles but could not get enough leverage so had to abandon that method.I jacked up the front end and put it onto axle stands, got underneath, braced my feet against the front suspension and pulled with all my might. It slowly turned and after a few revolutions it freed up.The new filter span on as easily as you would expect.P

ChrisC
I hope it's not a UFI filter, Caterham haven't supplied them for year. They used Fram for a bit, they now have their own brand.

Phil Six 7
Just out of interest how often should you change the oil in a Duratec? I'm taking delivery of a 420S in July and be interested to know when it would be good to change the oil. It'll only be driven on the road. Thanks. Amos91
Official schedule is a 1000 miles / 3 month service for the first change. Then it's 6000 miles / 12 months.
ScottR400D
I do mine every year, it's cheap enough and easy to do yourself so why not? That's regardless of mileage, which for me is typically 12-1500 a year.
Phil Six 7
Thanks Olly and Scott for the replies, yes I plan do it myself. Though I think I'll let the dealer sort the first 3 month one to catch any issues. One last question, is it 5W50 oil? I think I have read that on here.Cheers, Phil

ScottR400D
#21 Comma 5/50 is fine and other makes of that grade and lighter grades will do. Just make sure it meets the spec and is a decent brand.
