pete_h
As I get my car ready for sprinting, one thing the regs require is a Cat. Having investigated my current exhaust, it doesn't look like it has one - I.e. nothing visible inside the exhaust, no colouration etc. What are my options? Here is the current system in place - I suspect the collector is a cat replacement part - could I get one with a Cat? Off the shelf or custom made? Or get an exhaust with the cat inside it?Ideally the cheapest option, but then these things never are are they?
John Vine
In theory, what you're missing is this cat collector:https://caterhamparts.co.uk/collectors-catalysts/2091-catalystcollector-assembly-rover-vhpd.htmlplus the heat guard:https://caterhamparts.co.uk/collectors-catalysts/2658-exhaust-gaurd-catalyst-collector-rover.htmlThere may well be (cheaper) alternatives. No doubt someone who knows will be along soon.JV
Area Representative Piers300 Posted February 7, 2021 Area Representative Share Posted February 7, 2021 Looks like your 7 has the Caterham cat bypass system fitted. What you need is a second hand cat from either an R300K, R400K or R500K. I believe they are all the same.Someone may be along to correct this. Your photo shows the Caterham cat bypass system fitted, so what you have is a Caterham made system. My R300K is identical, hence above suggestion.
7 wonders of the world
Are you sure the primaries are CC ones..?Might be worth calling a few of the trams and placing a wanted add too, there might be one kicking around in someones garage. Can't really understand why the regs insist on a cat for competition.... racing only toasts them and its not as if they are in their working range anyway... Blackmamba
Reading this with interest as I am in a similar position. My R400K looks to have the same system / collector and no Cat. I suspect this will cause me problems come MoT time unless I find a friendly MoT station?
Hotfoot
I have been thinking about removing mine and getting a dummy cat shell put over the decat pipe. This type of thing. https://tgsexhausts.co.uk/product/dummy-catalyst/
Area Representative Piers300 Posted February 7, 2021 Area Representative Share Posted February 7, 2021 If I remember correctly, when ordering the R300/400/500K, the cat bypass was an optional extra. So it may be worth trying to contact the previous owners of your R400K who may still have the cat lurking unwanted in their garage. Long shot I know, but a new one from CC is a trifle expensive. 7 wonders of the world
JV,Think the one you listed is the VHPD which replaced the 4:2:1 collector - that's what I had on my K, which looks too long for the photo above....
Area Representative Richard Price Posted February 7, 2021 Area Representative Share Posted February 7, 2021 Pete,It looks to me like you have a non standard silencer. The original K R3/4/500 silencer was quite short, like the one in this photo:-http://www.stevecarter.com/R500/r500-800-6.jpgIf you had the standard short silencer, then the original CAT would have been this one :-https://caterhamparts.co.uk/collectors-catalysts/1149-exhaust-catalystcollector-assembly-rover-roller-barrel.html?search_query=catalyst&results=44It may be easiest to either replace your existing silencer with one that has an integrated CAT, or have your existing silencer modified to include a cat.I helped modify a similar silencer to yours a couple of years ago. 'less than a couple of hours work, and still passed sprint noise tests when fitted to a 'Busa.
pete_h
Thanks all.Richard I think you are right - it does look longer than the one in the photo, as the body of the silencer starts before the firewall. The vhpd one does look it might fit though, but not available of course. Modifying mine might be the cheapest option - do you have any suggestions on how? At least I would know it fits! I have seen the 'motorsports' cats on demon tweeks, and perhaps could cobble that onto the inside of mine. Or find someone who could fabricate me the whole thing. I will see if the previous owners have it, but I suspect not.
Wrightpayne
Pretty sure the R3/4/500 primaries are a bigger diameter than the VHPD ones.
pete_h
As luck would have it, a SLR one came up on faceache, and it appears that it has 1 3/4" primaries and 2 1/4" outlet, whereas mine is 1 7/8" primaries and 2 1/2" outlet. So bad luck for me....
