jcaswell
My car is 1995 imperial chassis, De Dion, 5 speed ,Ford diff LSD. When diving and take power on and off I can hear a knocking in the drive line. I have been going through a systematic check. Wheel bearing are good no play.Checked mounting of diff all seems correct. I have found a bit of play in the left rear axle. At the wheel end {outside joint} I can get 1/8" to 3/16" of movement by pushing up on that joint. The joint at the diff end can't really see any movement or induce any clicking sounds. Only the left side axle has the movement mentioned the other side seams fine. What are my options repair or replace? Thanks in advance.Jamie.
7 wonders of the world
propshaft joints ... OE ones are pretty cheap and wear very rapidly, downside is you need to remove the final drive to pull the prop. You can get uprated joints with grease nipples fitted no problem - I use Martin @ proptech in Hartlebury you mention being able to push up on the left drive shaft.. is this in the actualy shaft..? ie playbetween shaft and CV outer joint..? Bricol
My 2001 prop has grease nipples, has done 50000 hard miles and had a few pumps of grease in that time and is fine.I bought second hand one that also had grease nipples . . . which don't seem ever to have been used - both joints were notchy and stiff. A good greasing and exercising got them going a bit better..
elie boone
I guess you talk about the radius arm, you can replace the metalistic bush yourself but if you have a garage do for it you then better change the whole arm as they are only 51,52 https://caterhamparts.co.uk/radius-arms/19-radius-arm.html also have a look at the A frame bush for play. MADMALC
For the A frame bush, with the car on the ground get someone to push and pull the rear of the car violently from side to side. While they are doing this go under the car and put your thumb and first finger across the A frame bush and feel for movement.Relatively cheap and easy to replace. If there is any sign of oil contamination I would change it.
revilla
This was my A-Frame bush!
jcaswell
Hi, yes play in the outer drive shaft and the joint. Wheel bearings are fine. Looseness in the joint. I have the drive shaft out and see there is some clicking noise in the outer joint.
Wrightpayne
There was a recent thread where the preload spring inside the CV joint broke causing a knock as the driveshaft is free to move in and out unchecked.

revilla
The odd thing is that mine wasn't actually really making a knocking noise when driving. And then a friend suspected his A -Frame bush was knocking and asked me how to check it, so I demonstrated on my car ...
Tony Whitley
This one was knocking - I drove it back all the way from the Nurburgring like that
jcaswell
Looks like I need a left side axle. What are my options to buy from, Caterham on line, Redline Components any others. Also the large nyloc nut on the end of the axle is it reusable.
jcaswell
I need to drain my diff of lubricant. It's a Ford LSD 7 inch diff. I have the level / fill plug out. Do any of the rear cover bolts remove to drain the diff.
Wrightpayne
I removed the oil in mine with one of the big oil syringes from Machine Mart. Boot floor removed and pushed the long tube into the diff filler plug. I expect you could do it with a pela vacuum pump as well.RegardsIan
DJ.
I would replace the hub nut for peace of mind. The oil level should be below the drive shaft, so if you aren't removing the diff no need to drain Duncan
Tom_Arundel
Maybe replace the diff seal at the same time.
