Engine bay cleaner advice

Garth

Recommended Posts

Have my engine out and want to give the engine bay a good clean - plenty of stuff on the net - but would be grateful for some blatchat experience! Do not want to go too mad, but keen to get ride of the grime, oil etc. before touching up any rust etc.

In anticipation.... Garth

I’d avoid wd40 if you’re wanting to paint afterwards.

I’d use white spirit on a rag, which will remove any grease / oil / waxoil, then follow up with meths on a clean bit of rag to degrease the white spirit.

I actually hoovered down between the side skins and chassis rails with the henry as there was lots of detritus.

All followed up with fresh hot dinitrol.

I’ve just removed almost 30 years of grime from my supersprint using Bilthamber surfex HD.

It’s confusingly impressive as it removes grease like pure alcohol does yet it’s water based therefore in my mind i had previously dismissed it.

Great at removing sticky label residue and rescuing oily clothes.

Worth looking in to

Thanks for the science bit, here’s some pics of surfex hd sprayed on neat to a mixture of oil waxoil crud etc on my restoration project. Between the 2nd and third pics I sponged off the grime with a damp sponge. First time Ive uploaded pics so hopefully that works!
