Ngmatthewsme.com
Hi guys,Newbie here who is not at all technical so be gentle with me I have arrived via a long line of Elises in various states of tune and 255bhp s/c Exige.I have just bought a 2005 1.6 K series Roadsport and am looking to upgrade to Supersport engine specWhat is the difference between the two specs and what do I need to go to around 150 bhp? (MEMS, cams, verniers?)Is this the best (most efficient) way to upgrade or should I look at emerald, cams and porting? No doubt I'm not the first to ask thisMany thanks for your assistance and patience Nick, in deepest Cornwall
Smithy77
www.dvapower.co.uk is a good starting point Actually, you probably have experience with DVA if your Elises were K-series?Would depend a lot on what your furture plans would be as well. I'm sure some much more knowledgeble folk will be along to advise accordingly
Silver Machine
I own a 1997 supersport. Got a feeling its about 135 bhp. Dave Andrews fitted verniers and larger air intake which has made the car more drivable but I don't think these mods produced any significant increase in power. For my needs and (limited) driving skill I find this power to be more than sufficient for road use and touring. On track more power could be more than uttilised. As I am sure Dave at DVA will tell you the suppersport mod is a dead end one and increasing the power output beyond the 135bhp would involve starting all over again. If I recall DVA do a similar mod to the suppersport one. This mod can be developed further in the future if required. If you want no more than 135 bhp then the suppersport provides this at a reasonable price. If you see this as the first stage of ongoing engine upgrades then have a chat with Dave.
Area Representative Richard Price Posted July 6, 2015 Area Representative Share Posted July 6, 2015 "What is the difference between the two specs " The Supersport conversion is a change of cams and ECU, with the ECU having a higher rev limit on 7600rpm.To make a 1600SS go, you really need to rev it, so the increased rev limit is essential.Add a little porting to the head,a 52mm TB and a decent exhaust manifold (long 4-1 or a 4-2-1), then 150bhp is easily attainable.Rather than supersport cams, Piper 633's are just a little better all around, and a Z&F modified ECU is likely to be just a little better than an SS ECU, so you should not be far off that 150bhp.The next step of TB's and a programmable ECU is quite a bit more expensive, and would really come into their own with more porting, bigger valves, and wilder cams (likely to make 180bhp+)

thompster
Hi Nick,I bought an Academy/Roadsport last year and upgraded to supersport spec a couple of months ago. Having done a trackday before and after the upgrade I can say that its a worthwhile upgrade. Main difference is that it doesn't run out of puff at 6k but carries on pulling past 7k. It also has a lovely howl from 4k and some nice pops on the overrun.I picked up some good used CC (Piper) Supersport cams from a CDX special edition, Piper verniers and a CC supersport ECU that I had matched to my 5AS. Including sundries everything came to just shy of a bargain £300 and took about 3 hours to fit. (Quick caveat: second hand cams need careful installation so if in doubt the safest option is new.)DVA has some really good info on his site so spend a while reading everything on there. I ended up backing the inlet timing off a bit from recommended settings to improve the idle but might revisit it sometime. If you think this might be the first of a number of upgrades then I'd definatley talk to Oily about an Emerald. Area Representative Nick Bassett Posted July 28, 2015 Area Representative Share Posted July 28, 2015 Hi Nick,I've just come back from DVA, have had some mods done on my 1.4 Super Sport. Dave really knows his stuff, so you really should have a chat with him.If there is one thing I have learnt following my visit to DVA is to have verniers fitted to your cams and have them timed properly - mine were wildly out which according to Dave is quite usual when the standard cam sprockets are fitted - Caterham Cars being too tight to fit items that were up to the job...Whereabouts in Cornwall are you as I'm from Cornwall too! :-)Post my bout of 'upgradeitius' I have some SuperSport bits for sale if you're interested... plenum/TB, ECU, air filter etc...CheersNick
SM25T
I understand that the Rover engines were built with the cam timing about 8 degrees out ... presumably for economy or emissions ? Not altered by CC during their build process.

oilyhands
They are 8 degrees retarded because of latency in the belt drive system. the SS cams are supposed to run in a different lobe centre so the stock pulleys will be miles out even if they were accurate with the stock cams(which they are not).oily
Charlie Beaton
Hi all, recently bought a 1.6 K roadsport. The seller reckons he fitted new spax adjustables but hasn't 'set it up'.Any ideas about ride height,ie, is their a standard measurement from floor to say body, front and rear,or floor to lower shocker mounts? Also on inspecting the shockers/springs,I note that the lower end of the spring is not concentric with the shocker and is over to one side.Should there be a bush above the spring height adjusting nut to keep the spring central.Maybe when they fitted the new shockers it was left out.Cheers,Charlie.
