Like them or not, Rolex watches are tough, dependable and better than currency in many parts of the world. And each one I've owned has appreciated in value.

Anyway, I've decided to sell my Explorer II

- Bought new by me from my local Rolex Authorised Dealer, in France, in 2002

- Model 16570 with white dial

- Similar to this here

- One of the more tasteful and practical models

- Only worn occasionally, and fully serviced by Rolex in the UK in January 2013

- Fully valeted and unworn since (still has its protective stickers)

- All invoices, paperwork, documents, accessories and boxes

Current value c.£3,500. New replacement cost c.£5,000.

Virtually like new £2,950

Now Sold

That as always would be very kind of you Mike, but I fear it will end up as a Bank Transfer to yourself, although I will have a final push for you, that offer is very tempting, as I mentioned in a earlier post That car deserves the care I know you will give it

Knd Regards Paul

ps: where is PK,s address ;)

How much did it cost you to have your Rolex serviced?

I have a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust which has been on my wrist since 1988. I have worn it every day and I havent had anything done to it at all but now it is losing about 30 seconds a day. The quotes I have had for a service are huge! Not something I can justify at the moment. ☹️

Thinking of buying another watch for now until I can afford to have it done and then keep it for occasional use.

IIRC, I paid £475 for a full service (parts & labour) plus valet - came back like new.

Just sent a Girard Perregaux Vintage (simple mechanical movement) to Watches of Switzerland for a service. They sent it to GP and they came back with a quote of £1,303 for the service, £264 for a new glass, £326 for a new leather strap, and 16 weeks to do ☹️ 😔 *eek* *mad* In 2004 WoS charged £545 for the service and strap. Someone's taking the proverbial...

Yep sounds about right!

I have been quoted between £600 and £700 but if it needs something major like a new glass that could be more pushing it towards the £1000 mark! *eek* ☹️ *mad*

Apparently mine is now classed as vintage/classic so costs more to service ☹️

I have heard they come back like new. As I said it looks like I will get something else and save to get the service done and then keep it for occasional use.

Rolex service their watches in...Bromley....I have mine serviced once every 10 years and they come back as new...everything tightened, polished and where relevant with a new 'glass'. But I have my other watches serviced by specialists in each marque.

I too had a big estimate from Girard Perregaud many years go and had a local guy tailor a glass to fit it. There are people out there with the relevant skills. I guess my decision to have the Rolexes serviced by the manufacture is more about maintaining the resale values..a bit like main dealer servicing on a prestige car...

I know that my specialists will service a Rolex for half the official price and if I were on a budget, that would be what I would do.

I have an Explorer 2 (orange hand jobby ...) and have had it serviced twice by Rolex. The first time it came back, I was able to pull the winder clean out of the body and despite my complaints, nothing was ever done to rectify. The second time I sent it to them because I was advised that they were discontinuing their old watch service facility and that a service reciept would lend credence to the watches provenance. Unbelievably, it was returned with a complete link missing from the bracelet. Rolex refused to replace it on the grounds that I had acknowledged that because it was an old watch, and despite their best efforts, some damage might occur. The jeweler (a Rolex agent) through whom I dealt was deeply embarrased and replaced it foc with a link from an old watch.

For these (miss) services Rolexy charged me mightily.

Never again !

I'll find a good independent
