simon swallow
I have a 1.6 k series 133bhp and seem to have developed an intermittent ticking/tappet like sound after a burst of high rev's (overtaking, generally having fun etc). This quietens down after a few minutes of cruising behind the next queue of traffic. Occasionally it happens on start up but again quietens after a few minutes. Any thoughts on what this is? And what i should do about it? Thanks in advance.

rj
Have you overfilled it with oil? Then it might be air in the oil as the crank messes it up? /r
elie boone
It is the hydraulic tappet that lacks of oil momentairy. What type of oil is in the engine ?

wag
I have had that in the past using expensive American oil. I now use Comma 5W40 fully synth and it does not happen. I have the foam still in place (replaced every 2 yrs) and have drilled the sump gasket. I think the oil is the key.
simon swallow
Thanks for the advice. I don't think there is a problem with the quality of the oil so maybe its the "foam" filter that is the problem. Is it easy enough to replace? Are there any other potential issues that could be preventing oil getting to the tappets when i thrash it? Thanks again for your help.

Steve Cragg
Worth checking the spark plugs to see if one has come loose. Exactly the same sound you have described. I speak from experience! Edited by - Steve Cragg on 31 Jul 2012 23:46:
simon swallow
I know its been a while since i posted an update to this but the latest development is; due to what i thought was a completely unrelated problem i have replaced the battery. (The old one had stopped keeping its charge and was "38% and Unserviceable" according to Halfords) Since fitting the new battery the engine seems to run sweeter and the tappet like sound after bursts of high rev's has gone. Does this make any sense at all? Am i imagining it to be cured? Is the same problem still there ready to return... Thanks for your previous post, i would be interested in your thoughts on this one. Johnty Lyons
Eu2 or eu3 if eu2 it will be the metal infill strip over the plugs, has ledmany an owner a merry dance. 😬
elie boone
For sure it's a lot cooler than when u posted your first post, if you run thin oil this can be a reason for the clicking of the tappets
Bob L
May not be….Changed the battery on mine recently and found the rivets holding the battery tray very slightly loose which appears to have been causing a tapping sound to be present when not accelerating or breaking. Drilled out and replaced the rivets – then added a couple more as there is a lot of weight here. Just wondering if your new battery sits slightly differently eliminating the sound issue. Even if its not, well worth checking as a loose battery / tray under braking can cause a lot of damage ☹️
Paul Deslandes
Bob, you're not wrong about the battery tray breaking loose on heavy braking or impact. When I had my hillclimb shunt last year, the tray ripped out its rivets and the battery toppled forward, allowing the positive cable to touch the hot #4 exhaust primary. The heat melted the insulation and the cable shorted to the exhaust pipe. Shutting off the isolator switch didn't make any difference as it was downstream of the battery. Big washers under the rivets as a minimum are needed to stop this happening. I now have a Redtop laid flat and very firmly secured.
simon swallow
Thank you for your replies. I think i can rule out the loose battery suggestion as the original was held in place tightly and so is the replacement (thanks to the post from Paul i now know how important that is!). The ambient temperature could make a difference to oil viscosity but i would have thought once the engine is up to temperature the oil would be more or less the same as summer running (particularly with our summers). The spark plugs are tight. The only thing i have changed is the battery. Taking the car out for a few more hard drives is maybe the only way to establish if the problem has really gone. Will keep you posted and thanks once again.
