Pat the Plumber
6 speed, no problems forward, doesn't push down. Where do i start? Is the problem with the hydraulic clutch? surely the forward gears wouldn't engage either. Strip down?
Stationary M25 Traveller
Something detached in selector mechanism, remove tunnel top and plate around gearstick ?
6speedmanual
Pat As per SM25T, the quickshift gearlever mechanism is easy to remove. The lever passes through a spherical bearing and there is a spring in the bottom of the gearstick which controls the reverse push-down. Possibly could do with a clean up. Not heard of the stick not pushing down before. Usual problem with spherical bearing is the chrome plating breaks up and it seizes preventing easy side to side across Neutral. Anyway, worth an hour to pull it all out and have a good look at it. Cheers Peter
Pat the Plumber
taken the tunnel off and exposed the gear lever, taken it apart, but nothing seems to have come adrift or broken..............now what put it back and still doesn't push down. help required, proir to putting it all back together
6speedmanual
Take yer time Pat! If you leave it same time again before your next post, the blatting summer will be over! Does the lever move relative to the housing cover/spherical brg compressing the spring with it all in bits? It sounds from your description as if something is seized. Pat the Plumber
i've been busy....honest. Christmas, skiing and work........oh and it's SORN, it'll rain omn Sunday when it's taxed. all forward gears work. it just won't press down
mav
Did the lever work ok when off the box - could you press it down?
Pat the Plumber
Took the clip off, and the spring came off no problems, undid the 3 bolts that hold the lever in place, and pondered quite a lot then, as i didn't know what i was looking for, and put it back together. should i give the lever the rubber mallet treatment,
The Pikey
Pat as Mav says, with the lever assembly off the box can you push it down and compress the spring? Jason
Pat the Plumber
Strangley enough...NO
Stationary M25 Traveller
Lever seized in ball then. Remove from gearbox and spray with PlusGas for a day or two, then start working lever vs ball until it moves and you can extract it. Think there is a circlip involved to get them apart ? Once apart, clean up both parts and grease liberally.

myothercarsa2cv
Constituent parts are seen here. It's likely the bearing that is slightly rusty, bin it and buy a new one. Not cheap, but it's a fairly common size, and easy enough to change over. I even managed to get the tunnel top back on after tightening up the handbrake the other day 😬
Stationary M25 Traveller
I have just asked my bearing supplier pal a price for this bearing.
Mankee
Are the Quaife-style quickshifts all standard-fit on Caterhams nowadays? I've still got a gash old Sierra gear lever on mine. Mind you, it still works, so I suppose if it ain't broke...

Stationary M25 Traveller
Equivalent bearing from Rose would be £21.86 all up, or he could offer a British made equivalent brg, used in motorsport and Karting world, at £18.40 total price. Delivery couple of days. Price includes postage and VAT within UK.
Myles
Well it's no excuse not to go out blatting anyway. My Westie BEC has no reverse - and weighs (with full cage, two seats etc.) virtually the same as my k-series Caterham - and I've only ever once had to enlist the help of passers-by to 'reverse' the Westie (stupid mistake - parked downhill next to a junction - so left the car close in to the car in front. Came back to find car in front was still there - and the hill was steep enough that I had no chance of pushing the car back up to clear it!) Mebbe the vibration of a good blat will free it up! Harry Flatters
Phil at R&R defo does not recommend the Quaiffe QS levers on the 6spd box. It puts too much strain on the selectors and is prone to bending the forks.
Nigel R300
I took my gear lever apart today as i was having to use two hand to engage reverse the bearing was fine but dry, just caught it in time regreased and refitted now works great Thanks John (moca2cv) for the pictures and info on your website they were a great help Nigel
Pat the Plumber
took it apart.....again. SPC is just round the corner (3 minutes), he stripped it down and it was a stubborn little thing, cleaned up degreased and and back together, it's never felt so good. Steve also gave me a little plastic clip that he said goes between the lever and the gearbox, it didn't fit, so i put it all back together again and it all seems too sloppy now. Can anybody give any more information regarding this plastic clip, or have i just got the incorrect size. Or indeed does it need this. Will ask Steve again when they are open, but thought i would ask here first
The Pikey
Sounds like the the part that clips in where there fork engages in the selector rod. maybe he gave you the 5 speed version? six speed version
Pat the Plumber
Cheers Jason, that looks very much like the part i have, but like you said it's probably for a different lever.
Mankee
The saddle clip is listed on the Caterham Parts website as being for both the 5-speed and 6-speed boxes. Check that you are fitting it the right way. I knew I'd fit it the wrong way round so I took a reference picture of my Type 9 box just in case. http://images115.fotki.com/v607/photos/8/42688/7812053/DSCF1366-vi.jpg
