Domus
Anyone else got the letter from CC? New diff (open or LSD), carrier, drive shafts and prop shaft for ALL de Dion cars. Reliable and quiet. Exchange deal, who's first? Chance to change the weeping oil seal in the gearbox tail, tempted. www.peters7.co.uk
DJ.
That's interesting. As I've only just fitted my diff to my new build, I'm hoping that they might have given me the new one already, but I bet they haven't! It must be a completely new design to need driveshafts and propshaft changes. Duncan Some pictures of my build: here
The Pikey
About time! Anyone know what diff it is? BMW? what ratios? Jason
Brian W
Tried phoning at 1pm today to book my Sigma 125 SV in for the upgrade but got their answerphone message saying they are closed until 4th January. Will be phoning back first thing on Tuesday 4th.
spiderlane
Yeh I got the letter too this morning. Sounds good, although a little annoying that they've finally admitted quality problems (despite tell me that mine's not "overly noisy") and want to charge for a replacement even though mines only 9 months old. ChrisGillard
My Roadsport kit should arrive in Feb 2011 and they have been saying 'with BMW diff' to me for a while now. Seems like its happening. Chris
sevenmad
Wonders will never cease, mines only a year old but I'm sorely tempted. Any idea on cost?
Shad
If this diff and carrier fit earlier chassis as well perhaps it will open up more options for LSDs... Simon niknak.org
Angus
The BMW diff is a cast iron unit I believe, and so together with the carrier will likely add additional weight. And - together with new prop and driveshafts will likely not be a cheap option. Anyone got any more details ? Angus
spiderlane
"...Caterham will be offering the upgrade package to all existing owners at a special price, for a limited period only Open Differential - Parts Only £1020, Parts and fitting £1194, Retail (after 31/1/11) £1860 LSD - Parts Only £1554, Parts and fitting £1734, Retail (after 31/1/11), £2394 All these prices include VAT at the 20% rate and required the exchange of your old units... ....Each upgrade requires a new differential, a differential carrier, two new drive shafts and a new propshaft"
The Pikey
I think £1020 is actually very good value-for-money if you have standard noisy diff especially if everything is a few years old. Jason
Pendennis
Errrrrr.... My brand new Titan plate LSD cost less than £900.00 Want to rent an 18th century Farmhouse in Rural Somerset?
Angus
OK thats the price .... ....and what is the weight difference ? any details on that ?
The Pikey
Errrrrr.... My brand new Titan plate LSD cost less than £900.00 Same here but £1020 for a new diff and 650 quids worth of drive shafts and prop has to be a good deal if the exchange parts are getting a little long in the tooth.. Stephen Long
Can I just see if I have got this correct, I take my 125 Sigma to Caterham and they remove my old Bl@@dy diff and replace it with a quite BMW engineered device, replace the drives shafts a bracket and a prop shaft and charge me £1020. I drive away with a nice quite car If this is true I need to consider this very carefully because that's all that's wrong with my car.
The Pikey
Not quite, it's £1194 if you want them to do it. jason

Shad
I have a five pound note you can have for £6. Deal? Simon niknak.org
Z3MCJez
£1,194 - £1,020 <> £6. £1,194 - £1,020 = £174 Jez

spiderlane
@Angus - no details on weight. In fact, scant details at all in the letter - doesn't confirm the manufacturer (although BMW seems to be known), whether any modifications to the chassis are required, what type of LSD (e.g. Quaife, Titan, BMW, other) etc. Also the 4 weeks they allow to avail oneself of the "special" price it unlikely to be long enough for a few people to have them fitted and report back on noise/backlash and drivability - these are the things of most interest to me and I guess some others too. Pete-B
Good thinking Spiderlane, surely CC should make a statement giving some sort of guaratee that the new transmission benefits from quiet running to some extent or a similar warranty! Domus
The letter quotes "both reliable and quiet". It also asks interested owners to contact the factory. www.peters7.co.uk
Graham Perry
It will be interesting to see if it truly is quiet. Got my doubts to be honest
