Respray?

Been looking at getting a respray on my R300 - too many stone chips etc are making her look a bit tatty. One option is to strip the panels off and fit lots of carbon panels from CarbonBits, but I think that maybe out of my budget.

I've had one paint quote which involves doing the whole car; nose cone, bonnet, side skins etc etc - for around £1000.

Does this seem too cheap too expensive?

Are TSK the only people to go to for 7s or is it worth using someone else I've had experiance with on a tintop?

Cheers

What do you get for the £1000 or £700?

Is it drive in/drive out? Or do you need to strip car down to bare chassis? And will they strip side panels back to base coat/metal? as mentioned by top coat is just peeling off in huge sections so needs stripping back before respray...

knowley: Are you talking about a 'blowover' - e.g. preping the surface of your paint and respraying in the same colour? Or are you expecting a strip to bare metal and then etch/high build/top coats?

The amount of labour difference between a drive in/drive out complete bare metal respray and a top coat blowover of a prepped car is huge. You can't compare prices until you have a well defined spec - and even then, you can get into details about how many layers of paint you'll get, what type of paint will be used, and how much finishing they'll do.

I just had mine resprayed in BRG with yellow nose and stripe for £575 at a local garage with a decent reputation (no previous work on 7's but had just done a Morgan). The car was bare ali with BRG wings before. The ali was quite badly pitted in places so they has to do quite a bit of prep including filling the pitting to give a smooth surface and then suitably priming the ali. They did quite a bit of stripping but did just mask some bits. So, not entirely stripped as you might get if you pay £1000+. Very pleased with the result though. *smile*

Just worried now about the first stone chips *eek*

I would imagine this is just a blow over and respray in the original colour. I would expect a drive in/out job where the only bits that are taken off the car are the ones getting in the way?

The paint is a metalic blue - Caterham Azure Blue which the guy has already matched to an offical Lotus blue... its at my local independant Lotus specialist. I want more layers of paint than the original spray job because it chips soooo easily at the moment ☹️

I've always assumed with TSK you strip it down and take your chassis to them for painting, is that wrong?

TSK have just done the car I'm rebuilding and the work is EXCELLENT. Completed on time and sightly under the budget I'd planned too.

Flat colour is cheaper than £700 for the whole car from scratch.

Totally biassed (he's my father) plug if you're near Yorkshire - Hugh Spencer in Baildon. Does loads of classic stuff and will be doing me a bonnet stripe if I can get the car up there this summer.

Cheers,

Phil.

I have just had my car resprayed at TSK and the finish is excellent. I stripped the car myself and delivered it to Tony. He charged me £750 for a pearlesant paint job, plus he sprayed the interior panels, fitted lowered floors that I had purchased separately, sprayed the engine bulkhead, and he removed the exhaust headers, total price £1100.

Some photos here of the finished car in Lotus Lava Orange.

As previously mentioned Tony does a drive in, drive out service and his hourly rates are pretty reasonable but it obviously hikes the price up. To respray a car well requires quite a major strip down and is fairly time consuming putting it back together if your as ham fisted as me 😬
