  1. Great to hear you're back in action TMA, if you're lucky Caterham may replace it under warrenty as they did for me (sent the part for me to fit). Fit the new one so all the flex happens in the middle of the wire instead of at the sender. Hmm. Maybe an additional inline fuse would be a good idea too, that's a though for mine also.
  2. Hello, This is a long shot but I had exactly the same symptoms in my 2008 Roadsport last year. In my case it turned out to be the speed sensor on the off-side rear wheel which had shorted where the wire enters the sensor. The wires get a lot of flex as the wheel moves and so I guess are vulnerable. Worth a look, there's a plug connection on the chassis wide you can undo. I fitted the new one with a lot of precautions against a recurrence. Rob
  3. Hello from the red Roadsport parked opposite, sorry I didn't bump into you in person, hope you enjoyed your lunch!

If you can see this it's all gone horribly wrong ☹️ __________________________ See my Build Cam to check on my Roadsport Sigma.
  5. 115BHP at the wheels - doesn't sound a million miles off 150 at the fly-wheel?
  6. I've got some you can have, here: ...,., Sorry a couple got a bit squashed in the cupboard. __________________________ See my Build Cam to check on my Roadsport Sigma.
  7. I used my engine hoist to get the car off the stands - but be careful where you lift it in light of the recent discussions on jacking points. __________________________ See my Build Cam to check on my Roadsport Sigma.
  8. Just North of Asbourne this morning, I waved but didn't read your number. __________________________ See my Build Cam to check on my Roadsport Sigma.
  9. Thanks Dave, nice to bump into you and you also make my first ever spotted I was beginning to think I had the invisible 7.
  10. Great to meet Dave and his yellow aero-screened SLR on Sunday in Malham. Would have loved to chat and see your car in detail, but I was on a critical mission to get the ice cream in, you know how it is 😬 Hope you enjoyed the rest of the blat.
  11. to the 3M film from RiF, amazing stuff.
  12. Mine is wired with an in-line fuse off the battery positive, the lead runs with the main loom through the grommet into the cockpit, behind the carpet into the passenger foot-well & finally a to Maplins in-line socket cable-tied to the frame of the passenger seat facing forwards. The whole installation can be done without any fabrication or drilling, which is nice, and easily reached from the driving seat but not obtrusive for the passenger (but don't try to plug anything in while the seat is occupied ).
  13. Same here, with over 4000 miles done. I hired the sigma 125 before taking the plunge and found it just a bit tame, I'm glad I stumped up the extra dosh for the 150. The map that was installed in Autumn was worthwhile, improving cold running and some 'pinking' at medium loads.
  14. Well, here's hoping the quietness is here to stay. The videos seem to make the 'before' not as bad as it was and even with the 'after' there is a little mechanical noise in real life. I'm happy with the idea that the car has 500Kg less sound absorbing material than a modern saloon - that is the whole point after all - so I know it will be noisier. You'll want to listen to some of the Caterhams on YouTube to get a balanced view. I've done a couple of hundred miles this week, and I'll report back here when I've done about 1000. __________________________ See my Build Cam to check on my Roadsport Sigma.
  15. Hi Andy, Glad to hear you are getting some miles in now the weather has improved, hope to see you blatting some time. It's very difficult to describe a sound objectively and people do say of the diffs that TADTS to some extent. I became convinced mine was outside acceptable limits when I had a drive of my brother in law's Formula 27 (an inferior kit car) and he had a much quieter diff. So, I've posted a couple of videos with before and after noises to my LiveVideo page. I found the noise was worst under light throttle between 40 and 60 MPH (so drive with your foot flat on the floor and don't go so slowly I hear you say 😬 ) Here's the before: My diff. before replacement And after: New diff. Caterham Midlands said the new one was one of the quietest they'd heard so YMMV. Let me know if you are blatting West of York any time and maybe we can meet up and compare notes? 16. Maybe this belongs in chit-chat, but anyway. I just got back from Caterham Midlands who replaced my noisy diff. under warranty. What an improvement! It's like a completely different car, and earplugs are now merely 'a good idea' at 50MPH instead of barely sufficient to reduce the racket. Thanks Guys __________________________ See my Build Cam to check on my Roadsport Sigma.
  17. Does anyone have any advice on fitting an alarm to a seven? Are they effective on these cars and what model would people advise, preferably for diy fitting? I'd hate to lose my p&j but a shame not to use it through paranoia. __________________________ See my Build Cam to check on my Roadsport Sigma.

    Worrying

Not for long, but the two topics at the bottom (ahem) of the page upstairs are currently 'Endoscope - anyone bought one of these' and 'Pirbright Ring access' I wonder if they are in some way related? 😳
  19. Hi, I used double sided pads (came with the plates) and they worked fine at the back but soon fell off at the front. Caterham fixed the front one with Sicaflex at first service and it's still there. __________________________ See my Build Cam to check on my Roadsport Sigma.
  20. Hello Dave, YHM. Cheers, Rob __________________________ See my Build Cam to check on my Roadsport Sigma.
  21. Can anyone advise me how to install the water trap I've bought for my mini compressor? It's a screw on bottle, but when I fit it to the compressor outlet the point when it is fully tight leaves it stuck out at 90 degrees when it should be vertical. I must be doing it wrong.
  22. Sounds delicious, make mine a double! What are you going to call it? __________________________ See my Build Cam to check on my Roadsport Sigma.
  23. Sounds like some sort of chemical attack... Brake fluid? Could it be a weeping slave cylinder on that side?
  24. Bad Bob's build tips Workspace, tools and general preparation Paint the garage floor to avoid oil soaking in if you care about that. Get an old carpet to kneel on while you work. Good lighting is a help, get a portable work light on a long lead. Don't go mad on tools, you don't need the entire snap-on catalogue, find a local supplier of reasonably priced tools and you can pick odd things up as you go. You're only building one car, not starting a service station. You need a 250Lb torque wrench for just one pair of bolts (the rear hubs). TBH, I weighed myself, did a bit of maths and measured the offset on a long breaker bar. I got the large socket required for about £5 from a motor factor as above. Buy a set of taps/dies for cleaning up threads – these were invaluable to smooth assembly of some parts, mostly where paint or powder coat had contaminated threads. Order your fluids pack in plenty of time as you'll want to fill some parts before you complete the build (mainly the gearbox). Bodywork Polish all the bodywork before beginning assembly. There is no protective wax on it out of the factory and some of it is not accessible once the car is complete. Rust proof very carefully – aluminium and steel in contact are prone to corrosion cells. There are lots of places you can spray wax during the build that will then be permanently inaccessible, Dinitrol is generally considered superior to Waxoyl (it penetrates better for one thing). I used a paraffin gun on a compressor Hammerite or POR15 may have a role in touching up scratched/damaged powder coat, otherwise water creeps in underneath it. (Try Frosts on the web for Dinitrol and POR15.) Consider making blanking plates to avoid water and mud ingress between the outer skin and the foot well panels, the worst of the 'grot-traps'. Consider fabricating a blanking plate to protect the starter ring gear on Sigma engines because there is a 'window' left open due to the design of the bell-housing. I found thin sheet aluminium cheap in my local DIY shop's plumbing section. Paint the inside of the wings with stoneguard to prevent chipping from below. Some people bond the front wings instead of bolting them, for better appearance. Some people have later had problems with bonded wings flying off. Search blat-chat for the pros and cons of bonding wings. Assembly tips Read the manual carefully, and normally follow the sequence to the letter. Read between the lines to understand what problems others have had before you that you want to avoid. When built up, you can't get the upper pad retaining pin in due to the wing-stay. So the message is put the brake pads in before building up the front suspension. Consider heavy duty double sided carpet fitting tape for interior carpets, or fit with Velcro – not as neat but much easier to remove later for drying etc. Consider fitting a catch tank on the diff breather and extend the breather tubing. Loosen the filler plug on the gearbox before you fit it. You may be able to fill it before fitting the engine-gearbox assembly to the car if you leave the blanking plug in the back (to avoid spills when tilting it while fitting) and this would be a good idea. Fitting the diff can be tricky, it seems easier to get the mounting points aligned if you fit the lower bolts first. The diff is heavy and would be easy to drop, devise a stable support (or hoist) when trying to fit it. Take your time with everything, you're only going to do this once. Trial assembly is very much worthwhile before finally adding coppa-slip and a torque wrench. Post-build (Not applicable to Dubai, obviously, but I never miss the chance to have a pop at Leeds DVLA ) The SVA test (if in the UK) may take 2 months for appointment. Caterham can advise on the ‘best’ SVA station. Registration with the DVLA was much worse than the SVA, 7 weeks delay and incompetaence in my case, again ask Caterham for advice as policy and competence varies widely. Avoid Leeds DVLA like the plague. Have a look a the thread I started when I embarked on my build here. I got lots of helpful advice. Good luck with the build, you will enjoy it and miss it when you have finished. Post some photos for us! Building an R400, nice. 😬 __________________________ See my Build Cam to check on my Roadsport Sigma. Updated photos!
