  1. Just re-read your adjustment method. Rule of 9 is good but faster method is: Valves open 1ex 6in Valves adjust 3in 8ex Valves open 2in 4ex Valves adjust 5ex 7in Valves open 3in 8ex Valves adjust 1ex 6in Valves open 5ex 7in Valves adjust 2in 4ex olly Edited by - Q187RFB on 6 Jan 2007 20:30:59
  2. Mike Yes my build manual also gives Inlet 0.022” & exhaust 0.024” (with a cold engine). I was always told that I would noticed my cars performance had been compromised if the gaps were to tight. If the gap is to small it can prevent the valves closing fully or bend the push rods. Valve seat wear is the only thing I can think of that would cause the gap to gradualy close. Olly
  3. Hi Mike Are you mixing metric & imperial measurements? 0.20mm =0.008 in 0.25mm = 0.010 in. Regards Olly
  4. Look forward to,meeting you in the summer then you can explain how to shim the hub. The half shaft and hub I have just seperated are going replace a tig welded shaft I have fitted. Olly
  5. Thanks for the detailed instructions Chris I will print them off and keep them safe. Im located a couple of miles from Lulworth (Wool) so always try and make the Dorset sevens meeting at the Weld arms but have yet make it to the W Hants meeting. Olly
  6. Thanks Chris Oh what fun I had breaking the taper. Do you re-seat the taper with a good whack & then torque up or just gently torque it up. Olly
  7. Have done a search but cant find the answers. 1. The Ital half shaft has a key way to secure/position the hub. What size is the key way on the newer shafts 1/4 or 3/16. 2. Can you mix and match the 1/4 half shaft and 3/16 hub with a machined key or do they need to be a matched pair. 3. Thoughts on mixing a 1/4 shaft and hub on one side of the axle and a 3/16 shaft and hub on the other side. Thanks Olly
  8. Had the same problem on my 91 chassis & had to cut 1 inch off the bottom of the head rest silver mounting tube. This then allowed the head rests to be removed & replaced with the seats fully forward. The head rests are still adjustable for height on the passenger side but the drivers side is restricted by the diagonal bar. Olly
  9. Dom Purchased some gaz shocks to replace my tired spax units but have not had time to fit them yet. My reasons for selecting gaz being 1.price 2. Didnt want spax again. They can be rebuilt have a serial number matched to a dyno print out and have a 2 year warranty. I went for the spring and damper package and bid at his start price of £98. I didnt win but got sent a 2nd chance offer. Q
  10. I asked the same question when I got my car. My aluminium sump of the same dimensions takes 3 1/2 ltrs to bring the level between the high & low marks on the dip stick. After I have primed the filter and the oil cooler almost 4 ltrs are used. I found that if I run with a higher level than 3 1/2 ltrs it dumps oil into the catch tank from both breathers. Olly
  11. Thanks for all the help. Dave the answer is YES & NO YES the principle works but NO as I cant get a reliable and accurate answer. Have now admited defeat and fitted the sensor to the brake disc.
  12. Trying to calibrate a SPA digital speedo but need to know the dif ratio as part of the calculation. Without taking the dif out & counting teeth what possible ratios can I choose from for a live axle. Yes I know a bike speedo is cheaper and easy to set up. Thanks
  13. If you still have the standard calipers fitted you will find you have 2 pistons in each caliper. Each piston acts directly onto the back of a brake pad. If you had a sliding caliper it would only have 1 piston per caliper, force is applied directly to the rear of one pad and transfered to the other pad by the sliding movement of the caliper.
  14. My xflow is using a halfords HB 800a. Very easy to replace but the correct tension is critical.
  15. Thanks Brent sent my details to your work email today.
  16. About to attempt the 4 to 5 speed conversion on a 1991 xflow live axle chassis and need the bell housing to gearbox spacer plate. Could also be looking for a 5 speed to ital axle prop shaft.
  17. Starting to gather all the parts required to attempt the 4 to 5 speed gearbox conversion on a 1991 live axle chassis. But need to make up a new gearbox mounting bracket, is Brent Chiswick still making the conversion brackets. I have tried without success to contact him using the contact details from Low Flying. I really like the position of the 4 speed gear lever but have noticed the 5 speed lever is almost under the dashboard, is it possible to remote off the 5 speed and keep the gear lever in the same position.
  18. Brent Are you still doing the brackets to convert a 4 speed live axle to 5 speed gearbox.
  19. Dominic Happy with the price and wish to purchase your 5 speed. Does it by any chance include the gear stick or bellhousing spacer. Can you drop me an email when its ready for collection and I will arrive cash in hand kelvin@hellings42.freeserve.co.uk Kelvin
  20. Dominic If you are thinking of selling the 5 speed box I could be interested if the price is right. Kelvin
  21. Looking to fit a rev limiter to my Xflow engined supersprint, but need to know if I have a CDI ignition system. I have the Lucas system fitted with the finned aluminium box secured to the bulkhead above the pedal box.
  22. The Haynes manual for the Ital gives a final position from the threaded end of 2.84 inches (72.14mm). The manual for the Marina gives it as 2.84 inches (69.94mm)
  23. The last seal I fitted was a PAYEN NA203. I used the same method of fitting the bearing as Tom, just make sure you dont drift it on to far.
  24. LOCKHEAD BK 155 £23.14
  25. Many thanks for all your help. I returned to the garage with chapter and verse and watched him look it up in his handbook, but knew I was not going to win when he told me that the rules dont apply to Caterhams as they are not amateur built vehicles.
