  1. 50.2 was the best time recorded in the CSCC Mag 7s this year. So maybe not, "easy". That was in a CSR260. Jez
  2. Motor racing memory, that's known as. It's like the situation where a straightforward outbraking manoevre can be described in a level of detail that makes Senna's first lap in the rain at Donington look mundane. Jez
  3. Alex - I think that's wrong for an Academy car. Low 56s is about right. The lap record in Supersport is only about 53.4 and that's more power, more aero and more grip. I just checked this year's races, and the fastest Academy lap was Gazda in 56.08. All lap records at Brands will be relatively recent as the speeds went up with the new surface. As to whether you can get under 50s in an R500 with a sequential box and slicks. Yeah - easy! 😬 Jez
  4. I got a standard roadsport cage in the back of a 3-dr A3 (51 reg). Similar dimensions to a Golf. Both back seats down, obviously. It only went in one way round, but not difficult to get in and out. Jez
  5. CC seem to have made new ones more expensive since I started racing. I think they're £130 each now inc VAT. I've always managed to buy without tyres for around half of that, but then I also bought a set with nearly new race tyres of known background for £500. Problem is I keep breaking them :-( Good luck and BTTT Jez
  6. Crotch straps please! Jez
  7. If you want the race type crotch straps (that fit over the shoulder straps, and thus pull away from your important parts) then I have a set that are no longer good for racing (they're dated 2012, and my season is done), so will be coming out of the car over the winter sometime. You need to have the waist straps with the hoops on them to use them. Let me know, Jez
  8. I raced for 2 years with a front plate held on with velcro and it never came off, apart from when I ploughed through a very soft gravel trap. Jez
  9. I think they're standard. And I think I've got some lying around. I can check tomorrow night. Blatmail me an address. Jez
  10. I think SPY Motorsport are in Henley. The have lots of experience rebuilding cars! DPR are near Guildford as possibly the next closest race team. Jez
  11. I bet £5 to NtL that you'll break a bighead before the end of the Academy year. Not sure about the front wing colours! 😳 Would you self-wrap again? Jez

    Rear Springs

Tony - I think I have a set. They are from a 2009 car, were used for about 4,000-5,000 miles - almost all track, and were taken off the car at the end of 2010 when I upgraded to higher spec for the next class of racing. Track miles are (in my opinion) not harsh on suspension (as opposed to bearings etc.) at tracks are generally much flatter than roads. Caterham Parts has them for £47.40 each. How about £45 + delivery for two (I.e. about half price). Jez
  13. Caterham racing regs specify lower holes, but I'm not sure if that's Ford diffs only as I don't have the Academy regs. Jez
  14. As Peter says, this has to be the answer in the near future. However, presuming that CC don't want to develop two chassis variants, then I can't see this happening until the race cars are all out of Ford diffs. In 2012 only the Academy and in 2013 the Roadsport too are the only series running BMW diffs. It will be 2015 before Supersport has the BMW and I don't know what the plans are for the R300 / R600. Thus I see the diff carrier as having 3 years of life left yet. Jez

    Horrible noise

Sorry to hear ☹️ It sounded like the problem my sigma had when it blew. I know it's a different engine, but I learnt 2 things: 1) It needs to vent oil into the catch tank to calibrate what he right oil level is. 2) long right handers are the worst - You weren't at Snetterton were you? Or Mallory? Jez
  16. I tried a set of old tyres on track and they didn't grip at all. Not dangerous, just really slow. The rubber had gone hard. Jez
  17. Steve - Unless you're planning to do a lot of track days 2 sets if CR322s will be fine for a season. Jez
  18. If anyone buys a new nosecone to cover the holes, I'm looking for a 2nd hand nosecone in black or Caterham yellow. Up to £60 depending on condition. Jez
  19. Steve, If you ask, the answer will be "no". Particularly if you are asking for a replacement that is not a standard Caterham part. It's easy to say your mod offers no advantage, but this is a black and white world. This year half-a-dozen cars had to refit hoodsticks, notwithstanding that the cars didn't have windscreens, as the regs doesn't say that they can be removed and someone asked a clarification question. Thick back bag seats are in existence across the grid. The bead seats (see DPR Motorsport's website) are better than the 2-part foam ones, but you pay for it. Jez
  20. Agreed Malcolm. More haste, less speed, in getting my point across. Jez
  21. Quoting Englishmaninwales: Quoting Z3MCJez: Incidentally, replacing front bearings without replacing front hubs is folly. It's the hubs that wear (being made of aluminium) more than the bearings, assuming that the bearings have been properly greased. Jez Sounds like you must have spent loads of money unnecessarily 😳 Old fashioned centre punch? Bearing lock? Bearing lock would solve it temporarily. But it's a race car and any unnecessary play become a really nasty vibration at 115mph. Hubs are not expensive in the scheme of running a race car. And as they are constantly fully loaded in corners, they do wear. It's something that goes much quicker (mile for mile) on a race car than a road car. Worse again as you move to slicks. Jez

    Track day tyres

Don't put slicks on a 125. You'll be so overtyred that it will lose the fun. If you want old CR500s I've got a few, but they're all on wheels at the moment. Jez (in Kent)
  23. Incidentally, replacing front bearings without replacing front hubs is folly. It's the hubs that wear (being made of aluminium) more than the bearings, assuming that the bearings have been properly greased. Jez
  24. So I spoke to Avon and while I'm not that technical when it comes to tyre carcasses and they weren't that clear, it seems that the weight will be pretty much unchanged and the tyre compound itself will be unchanged. Therefore the biggest remaining question is why not allow old tyres to be phased out across the first 3 rounds (say) of next year to save money for the racers? HMMN. Jez
  25. I understand that they're replacing every Academy diff carrier at Rockingham this weekend. Jez
