I would recommend doing as much work as you can with each grade as you slowly get finer and finer. The less swirling you can see at any stage, the easier the next step will be. Keep wiping the surface down regularly as you polish, and buy a few hundred clean cloths. Having gone thru this process a couple of years ago my advice would be DON'T DO IT. PAY FOR PAINT .. .. .. .. .. well OK, possibly not. It's worth it in the end. If only to stand back, see your reflection in the Aluminium and say "I've done that". There will be times when you are polishing that you will WISH you had made that decision, and you will NEVER be happy with the polished finish. There is always one panel that looks worse than the others, you will scratch the finish with your finger nail (not joking there), and the sun will come out and show swirl marks that you never knew existed. And then you take it out on the road, it gets dirty and you need to clean it .. .. and you know that whatever you do will end up with scratches in the finish .. .. .. Mine now looks less than pristine, and should have a major polish over the winter .. .. but I will hopefully find something else to do with my time (like finish running in a recently re-built Pulsar).
