  1. ECR, Cheers for the info. I managed to get the inner ball joint unscrewed from the RH side of the rack. It looks like it was attacked with a cenrte punch to fix it to the locking nut. Unfortunately I can't wind the lock nut off the rack as the thread is damaged where the lock nut met the inner ball joint. I've therefore gone for option 1 and put a hacksaw cut through the nylon spacer/stop. I've turned the bush with 0.5mm clearance between the OD of the rack and the I.D of the bush. I opened the split and popped it over the steering rack. I then tuned the steering to full LH lock and it pushed itself nicely into the recess in the outer case, stopping on full lock before the LH cycle wing hit the body It stayed inside the outer case (as planned) when I returned the steering to the centre Sooooo, It looks like the job can be done without dismantling anything. I'll confirm it once I've done the LH side and road tested it. Hope this helps someone else as there seems to be quite a few topics in the archives on this problem with few solutions. Bruce. 2. O.k I've taken the plunge and loosened the inner lock nut (RH inner ball joint). I'm now stuck trying to unscrew the ball cup. Off up to shed now to make a small 'C' spanner.
  3. I've measured and made 2 nylon spacers to fit my 1993 Clam Shell steering rack. This will prevent my new cycle wings hitting the body on full lock. I believe Caterham used this method for a short time. I have 2 choices to fit them. 1. Cut through them with a hacksaw and try and fit them over the rack without dismantling anything. 2. Disassemble the inner ball joint and slide the complete spacer over. I prefer this method but I'm not sure how the inner joint is pulled apart. There seems to be a lock nut on the inside (I'm assuming RH thread both sides) but nothing to grip onto the ball socket side (no spanner flats etc). There is a hole in each inner ball joint housing. Is this for a special 'C' type spanner or something else? Has anyone stripped the inner ball joints? Do I need to remove the outer ball joints to unscrew/adjust the inner joints? Any help appreciated. Bruce.
  4. Chris, Looked at the website and got the tape measure out. I'm pretty sure I'm the next size up 😔 Did you have a Kart? I was thinking about buying a cheap Kart instead of track daying the 7. Thanks anyway. Bruce.
  5. Les, Thanks for the information I've now got the wings fitted. I'm going to test drive it to see if I actually like them and then tackle the steering stops and bodywork. I just hope it's all worth it! Bruce.
  6. Chris, I'm assuming this would be a bit tight on a 5'8" tall, 15 st person 😔 Bruce.
  7. Simon, It's sold and it was a wide track (I posted a reply on that ad) Thanks for the thought anyway I guess its off with the gators to see how to shim the existing rack. Bruce.
  8. Stu, The new cycle wings hit the body on full lock, so I guess newer racks have less travel. No one upgraded a cycle wing 7 to a quicker rack? Bruce
  9. Thanks John LH Wing now drilled and ready to fit (after measuring 4 times and drilling once)! RH wing won't take as long. I got most of the fixings from B&Q! which will do until I get stainless ones. I have to admit, the cycle wings are starting to grow on me! Bruce.
  10. Just testing the water. I'm after the above to fit my 1993 Dedion car to save me shimming my clamshell rack. It's a matter of how much is it worth to save the hassle! Bruce.
  11. Thanks for the replies so far Is 100mm pitch and 4mm bolts about right for the fixings? Bruce.
  12. Oh, can anyone tell me what size bolts are used? I'm assuming M4. Are rubber washers used between the GRP and bolt head? I'm still trying to decide whether to use RIF's fixing kit or not. I've just got this thing about seeing things bolted down! (especially if the wings may hit the body on full lock!). Ta, Bruce.
  13. Hi, I'm after the following info:- Leading edge of wing to centre of fixing holes (55mm?) End of wing stay to 1st centre first hole (5mm?) Centre first hole to centre second hole across wing direction(100mm) Does the inside of the cycle wing normally touch the wing stay ?(this seems the closest to getting the cycle wing central to the tyre) Do you put foam rubber between the cycle wing and wing stay ?(similar to that used on the clam shell wings). Any advise appreciated. Bruce.
  14. Thanks guys, .............Some very useful information there. Nemo, photos show the coversion well. Why did you reskin it after doing all that work filling the holes? What type of paint did you use when you covered the holes and what colour BRG is it? (i.e. twin pack). What did you do with your steering rack?
  15. Thanks Guys Especially Dave who seems to have done this conversion and can feel my pain I just hope the fact that I will be able to see my suspension going up and down is worth it! Bruce.
  16. Jez, Thanks for the info I've already popped both top ball joints as I didn't fancy cutting slots into the wing stays. So I'll be phoning CC tomorrow for some more rubber boots. I got my cycle wings cheap but have noticed the moulded step around the edge only goes around 1 end. It looks like the ridge/step has been machined off the other end. The question is, which end does the fully moulded ridge go. From the various photo's I've seen, I think it's the front/top. How many people fit mud flaps? (you don't need mud flaps with clam shells!) Bruce.
  17. Cheers Andy They help a lot. Guess its off with the brake pipes as well then! funny how these quick jobs just get bigger and bigger: I just hope all the effort is worth it. Bruce
  18. I got my Banner Battery from Ajay Autoparts (Canterbury) a couple of years ago. Bruce.
  19. I've started this project with good intentions but hadn't realised how much grief the job intailed! Can anyone help with the following: 1. Do the headight brackets mount at the back nut of the top/front wishbone fixing. It seems a bit of a squeeze and I've had to bend the front mount of the headlamp bracket to fit. NOW FITTED 2. Is it easier to cut a slot in the top cycle wing mount rather than pop the top ball joint? (This will save me having to get new ball joint rubbers) 3. Does the steel flexible brake pipe have to be removed and put through the cycle wing bracket near the back? I'm a bit concerned it will rub as the steering and suspension move. 4. How difficult is it to shim the steering rack to prevent the cycle wing hitting the body on full lock. 5. What is the most successful way to block the clamshell wing mounting holes. I know you can stick ally plates behind some, but what about the 2 big holes? (I've currently got 2 rivnuts with screws stuck in, some minor corrosion and minor ripples and dents around the old mounting holes. 6. Can I use the side repeaters from the clam shells on the cycle wings? I'm hovering over just buying a new pair of BRG Clamshells and fitting those instead...... but that would be too easy! Thanks in anticipation, Bruce. Edited by - brucey on 17 Jan 2009 21:16:35
  20. Spotted going from Postling towards Stowting at junction with Stone Street. I was the one giving the Benny Hill/1950's AA Man salute! You asked my Son the way to Stowting (He was sitting on my Gas Gas Trials Bike!) The old boy in the Morgan was giving it some! Hope you had a good drive, Bruce. Probably not blatchatters then Edited by - brucey on 12 Jan 2009 19:00:26
  21. Ian, Would the throttle bodies be suitable for an R300 engine (I'm currently running my old 1400ss plenum and ecu) Why does the air filter assy cost as much as the throttle bodies? With the amount of gear you are selling, I can only imagine what size garage you must have! Bruce.
  22. No problem James. I've got plenty to be getting on with! Bruce.
  23. J, Thanks for looking. I didn't realise there were different types of headlamp bracket. As Martin has a pair, I'll wait for those. James, Cheers, I look forward to receiving them. I picked up the cycle wings last night so I know what I'll be doing over Christmas! Bruce.
