    831C xflows

Not really got a definite answer for this so far. Are all xflow engines stamped 831c8315R34 from South Africa and same as the ax blocks? I've got one in my Supersprint which has ax stamped above the 831C etc but I've seen others without the ax stamp but still with the same 831C etc. Would it still be the same thicker walled block? Cheers
  2. Oh right, on a xflow? Have you got the escort 4 speed gearbox?
  3. Unless I'm very confused they are on the same side of the engine and that side does get very hot. Wrapping the exhaust manifold will get the temperature down but if you do make sure you take your time and do it properly, can make things dangerously worse if not done well.
  4. I recently took my xflow out my live axle 7. It is tight but comes out fairly easy, without gearbox. You can detach water pump and other bits to make it easier but I didn't, think I did remove alternator and started motor though.
  5. As Elie said if you're just getting silence when you turn the key check all connections for tightness or rust. You could try to put a heat shield around the starter as can get hot from the exhaust manifold on that side. If it's cranking but not firing check dizzy cap and all leads, coil etc. Check your tappets, valve clearances, make sure they're not too tight. If it's a mechanical fuel pump check that's working ok, maybe look at a facet pump upgrade if so. Could be a carb issue also. Just remember when you're in the cold garage and trying all sorts of different remedies and nothing is working...it's all part of the fun of ownership.
  6. I don't think they are available from that site. I asked a while back and they said they were still waiting like Burton's. If you find they are though great and let us know. Cheers
  7. Just had quick look and found two tensioners with bolts if you need anything. The pad is just put on the pin sticking out from the main bearing cap and held in place by the tensioner and then when sump is on, there's no fixing for it.
  8. Hi Peter. I'll send you a PM later. I've got loads of xflow bits in the shed so I'm sure I'll have the parts you need, fixings etc. Just pay for postage. I've had mixed reports though on using a single width pad with a duplex chain. Some people say it's fine, actually preferred over using the double width pad that Burton's etc supply because of their poor quality. But others have said it's not recommended to use the single width.

Sorry no. Good luck with your search though, one will turn up I'm sure. You're making a wise choice going xflow in my opinion.

And what exactly is wrong with a Q plate car please??? Only joking, i know the issues some people have around it and if i could lose my Q plate i would, but once you're in it, driving it, who cares what the plate says. I wouldn't let it put you off if one becomes available, just make sure you have a good thorough look over it and check the history etc. You'll probably find they can save you a shilling or two also.
  11. There was a good drawing and article in last month's low flying i think regarding the buffeting in the car with a windscreen and no doors.
  12. Im also looking around for a nice pair of chrome wing mirrors, but for a brooklands aeroscreen, if anyone likes to advise what they use. As for driving without doors, it certainly adds to the back to basics experience. I dont mind it on short trips but if planning on anything a bit more than an hour or so, stick the doors on!
  13. As already said the xflow in the 2nd link is a 1300 and unsure condition so not worth much more than £100.
  14. Taken comments into consideration, and yeah can see about having it and hopefully not needing it being the sensible view. I'm getting some chrome paint to spray it to see if that helps it blend better with the bare ally body, rather than the black. Cheers
  15. After trying out a brooklands aeroscreen on my supersprint, I now like the look of the car without the rollover bar, looks a smoother flow. Does anyone else drive without a roll over bar? How many Caterhams over the years have actually ended up on their roof, in road use not the track? Would I be mad to do it? I like the look of a single roll hoop but can't find one anywhere.
  16. Yeah I know, a single chain would have been fine, after all the engine had done 30000 miles with no problem. But I had a duplex setup in the drawer in the shed which I've had a while and thought now's a good time to use it.
  17. Cheers for that 7 wonders. I've already spoke to them and are out of stock. I've now tried about a dozen places and all said are on back order or out of stock. Regarding the phone call and other people's comments. Maybe you've caught her on a good day or I caught her on a bad day, but she was damn right rude with me and very aggressive. Calling her "a bint" was perhaps out of order but I was fuming at the time and probably my mistake coming on here straight after speaking to her. Anyway I'll say no more about her. What I'm thinking of doing now after reading up about it is to use a single width pad from Ford, this apparently works ok and according to lots of people the standard of the pads from Burton's are pretty rubbish anyway. Cheers
  18. I doubt she speaks well of anybody. I asked politely if she had the part and her very, very short reply was, "don't exist!" I tried to explain to her, yes they do, I've used them before, but nope, " don't exist, no such thing" yes I said I bought previously from Burton's but at moment they're on back order, "you don't know what you're talking about, no such thing" He's a lucky fella having her, such a warmth about her.
  19. Will do Ed. Just tried Wilcox Engines in Hinckley on the phone. F**k me, that bint that answers the phone is rude as hell. Just put the phone down on her, she was so blunt and aggressive and arguing with me. Will keep ringing round other places.
  20. Long shot I know, but. About to finally start putting my xflow back together and I need a double width tensioner pad to fit my new duplex chain setup. I've tried Burton's etc but can't find one anywhere. Don't suppose anyone has one lying around, new or decent second hand is fine. Thanks
  21. Thanks Roger. What you say of course makes perfect sense. Always grateful of your advice, cheers.
  22. Thanks for your reply as always Roger. The rods have been lightened and balanced with the pistons, all within .5 gram of each other. The crank looks like it's been balanced as has several holes drilled in various places and marks to line up with flywheel and clutch cover. Am I right in thinking though that the crank needs balancing together with the rods and pistons and as the pistons I'm using are new forged so lighter, then it would all need balancing again? Thanks
  23. Was looking into whether I need to get the crank and flywheel balanced on my Supersprint 1700 Xflow rebuild. Noticed there are already a few holes drilled into the weight parts of the crank and arrows in the crank, flywheel and clutch cover to match things up. Does this mean it's already been done at the factory? I know all cranks are roughly balanced but is it important to get it balanced more accurately when rebuilding to a higher spec? Been quoted £180 to get it balanced which I'd rather spend elsewhere if it's already been done good enough. Thanks
  24. I was going to suggest dizzy cap as above says. Check rotor arm and general cleanliness and condition as well as leads.
  25. I've got a MG TF 160 with the same vvc engine. It ran lovely with Castrol magnatec semi 10w 40. I then serviced it last year but put in a different brand, still semi 10w 40, but the vvc was a lot chattier, especially from cold. I changed back to magnatec and went back to be a lot quieter, so I'd definitely recommend using that.
