  1. Thanks Auyt. I did check other places and they said the same sort of figure as Roger, which i thought they would.
  2. Thanks for that Roger. I am using the standard xflow pistons yes not the flat tops. Cheers
  3. Hi. Just having my 1700 rebored to fit 83.5mm accralite forged pistons. Chap's asked what the piston to bore clearance should be. Any ideas? Also will any other machining to pistons be needed? Refitting 234 cam, standard rods etc. Cheers
  4. Hands up time, realised i've made a school boy error...i've had man flu last week which im putting it down to. Its one of the liners/guide inserts which came out with the valve, not the actually guide. I tapped it back in and the valve will move up and down but very tight to actually get it all the way out. Should i have lubed it or will it be ok, or new insert needed? Cheers. I'll do no more to the engine till this obviously serious illness has passed!
  5. Thanks for your replies. I've tapped the guide back in carefully and is now tight, but can't now push the valve through. Also the guide just seemed like a basic uniform shape not tapered at ends like the ones I've seen in Burton's etc.
  6. Hi. I've been given a nicely ported and big valve cylinder head for a xflow. Looks quite tidy but when I tried taking an inlet valve out to check it was heavily coked around head, which hopefully will clean but also the guide came out with it. Is this ok, will it just pop back in the valve or should it be firm and not pop out? Taken exhaust valve out too next and that stayed in ok. also how can you check to see if it's had hardened exhaust seats for unleaded, hard to see? Thanks
  7. Hi. Rebuilding my xflow and really want to put in forged pistons but I just can't justify or afford a new set at £600. Thought I'd just try see if any of you had a used or unwanted set kicking about you don't want, long shot I know. Cheers
  8. Well I'm definitely convinced now to go the forged pistons route. Best price for the accralite 83.5mm ones are Burton's at just shy of £600 for the set. Anyone know anywhere cheaper, or if there's any good second ones about? Am I right in thinking they already have the right cutouts for either the 234 or 244 cam? I've got a 244 sat in my shed so might put that in as well while I'm at it. I shall use the same rods, with new bearings obviously, is that ok too? Thanks
  9. It's been reading some of your previous posts on this subject Roger which has got me thinking about the upgrade. I don't mind spending a few more bob if it's going to be worth it. The engine's the 1700 ax block. That means it'll bore out ok. What size bores nd pistons do you recommend going to now, 1760, which is 85mm pistons, is that right? Thanks
  10. As the xflow is coming out, it's done 34000, for a refresh I thought I'd look at the Piston isue. Was weighing up either just new rings, new 1300+90 pistons and rings etc or going for new forged pistons. Keep hearing about the 1300 pistons being a possible issue, and as they were originally for a 55hp car can understand why, but these have done 34000 miles without beaking up so is it worth the extra expense? If so I've seen a set of forged by a company called JE Racing for a fair price,, anybody heard of or used these? Cheers
  11. Thanks for all the replies. I changed the float levels, I checked the timing, balanced the carbs, even put in some fresh petrol and now seems quite a bit better, feels more torquey so happy with that. Always something though. I've now noticed a scraping noise from somewhere. Doesn't do it on idle but when under load you can hear it especially when you lift your foot off again, quite a loud scraping sound. Hard to pinpoint exactly where it's coming from. I'll check pulleys first, maybe alternator? There's always something on these old engines, part of the fun!
  12. Just seen a YouTube clip by a Weber chap in Australia. He says measuring the distance for the later black barrels from the middle but my speed series Weber book says measure from the bottom. This makes a big difference when fully dropped holding horizontally.
  13. Thanks for all that info Roger. I did find the tickover of 7000 a bit much you're right...so I lowered it to around 700 -800 instead! It does tickover very nice. It has got the 50f9 too. It just feels a bit sluggish when putting your foot down around 3000 revs onwards, hSnt got that pull I'd like. It's the standard 1700 Supersprint xflow but with megajolt. I just noticed that my float levels seemed way off and wondered if that would be contributing to the sluggish feel.
  14. I have the black spansil type floats.
  15. Thanks for your reply Auty. I've taking the top of the carbs off to check jets etc. The floats when held vertically, Gap is 16mm, closing to 8mm, when holding it horizontally it droops down to 40mm. Does that sound right? In a book I have it states when held vertically it should be Gap of 12mm and then when held horizontally the full droop should be 26mm. Should I change it, is that what could be making it run rough? Thanks
  16. Hi. My xflow Supersprint feels a bit bogged down and lumpy when opening the throttle. Ive used a synchrometer to check the balance first of all and had reading of just under 3 on first and just 4 on the other. I've balanced them both to around 3.5, tickover over around 7000rpm. Question is does that sound ok? I've seen and heard other people when balancing 40 Weber's getting readings of 6 and 7. Mine sounds quite low. Car has been sat around for quite alot recently so next I'll be checking the Jets to see if they're a bit gummed up. Car runs a megajolt which I'm new to so wonder if that affects it too.
  17. Just had a look and there's a cube shaped facet pump on eBay, which looks the same as mine, which says it's regulated to 2-4 psi pressure. So maybe if that's the one fitted I don't need a regulator. Does seem to be running ok without one.
  18. Thanks for the replies. I'm away at the moment so can't look till the weekend but I don't remember seeing any other numbers on it. I'll look into getting one then because I was pretty sure it should have one. Thanks
  19. Hi. Recently bought a 93 xflow Supersprint in need of some tlc. It has a facet fuel pump near the tank which I can just make out is a cube shape and had a red sticker saying facet then looks like 57AA. Car doesn't have a pressure regulator though which I thought was needed with these. Car seems to run ok. Do I need one and if so what do I need and where does it go? Thanks for any help.
  20. Hi. Have a bare aluminium Supersprint with green nose cone and wings. Rear arches are now quite badly scratched in places and need respraying or replacing. Nose cone I'd like to change from green to yellow colour. Any advice on spraying diy at home? What products and techniques do you use? Thanks
  21. Pm sent Neil. Thanks Im just addicted to the oldskool sound and feel of the xflows.
  22. Looking for a good xflow engine to fit into my car, preferably one which is pretty much ready to drop straight in but would consider engines which might need a bit of work. Thanks
  23. Hi. Just spotted on eBay a 1.6 k for £7,250! This looks like the exact same car I was interested in last year when was up for sale at a dealership for £16000. Photos are the same they used then. Despite good feedback for seller this looks a bit dodgy to me, there's no mention of any damage and they say it's in perfect condition. Just saying, but if anyone here was thinking of going for it..be careful! If it's genuine it's a bloody bargain.
  24. 7 wonders, I tip my cap. Just received your messages and will give it a go. Thanks for all that advice. Cheers.
