With 49 replies in, I have had a quick look at the data.

11 have had HGF (22%)

Failure rates by engine size (1.4, 1.6 and 1.8) only

1.4 - 4 out of 7 (57%)

1.6 - 6 out of 19 (32%)

1.8 - 1 out of 20 (5%)

Average mileage at failure

1.4 - 37k

1.6 - 20k

1.8 - 10k

Average mileage of non-HGF cars - 17k

Average mileage of HGF cars - 25k

So. The smaller the engine, the more likely HGF. But - as the 1.4 engines are likely to be older than the 1.6 and 1.8 engines (supported by these cars having higher mileage), it may just tell us that the older the car, the more likely HGF is to occur, which doesn't tell us much that we don't already know!

Twould be more interesting if you were able to survey a similar quantity of MGF or Elise owners with K series installations and make comparisons between them - i.e. is hg failure at this percentage specific to the K or specific to the Caterham?

It would be useful to remove failures from the results if caused by poor maintenance, mostly coolant related.

I know this is tempting fate but my 7 has 40,000 on it and my old Metro GTI 16V had over 100,000 when sold, no HG problems at all; I always change my coolant every two years and check level and strength regularly.

I have a colleague with a Rover 216 (lozenge shape) that has over 140,000 on the clock without a head gasket failure - does that count in the statistics? *confused*

Meant to add - was also told by an AA guy I know that use of the correct antifreeze in the right proportion is also critical.

22k so far

1.6 Supersport - c. 135BHP

interestingly I had a little hole develop on the water rail that enters the block which leaked - looks like a head gasket failure due to the coolant all over the block, so it can get you worried - 7 workshop welded it shut and painted it.

1. Yes, but only evident as detached elestomer seal on removal of head by Oily. Head not warped, liner standoffs all equal at about 4.5thou. No significant fire ring pitting.

2. 22K

3. 2K

4. 1.6 Supersport EU2
