Leadership Team RogNeedham Posted July 5, 2005 Leadership Team Share Posted July 5, 2005 putting a manual oil pressure gauge on the car on Saturday and cranked then engine over to get some oil in the tube, and...........a horrible fudge coloured fluid emerged ☹️ ☹️ ☹️. confirmed loss of compression with 9 bar on pots 1 & 4, 6 bar on pot 2 and3 bar on pot 3 ☹️ ☹️ ☹️ drained both oil(well sort of oil)and water (with oil in it) to find I had c. 7 litres of sludgy liquid then removed the head to find the gasket intact and no real sign of water in the cylinders....so discretion being the better part of valour and having spoken to Chris at 7 Workshop I've decided that to tinker any further would extend my limited capabilities to far therefore the car is off the road until I get back from hols mid-August ☹️ ☹️ ☹️. Chris can fit it in then and consult with the guys who know the history of the engine. I'm not 'appy coz I'd just got the hang of the power delivery -but I'll just have to be patient DAMN DAMN DAMN DAMN DAMN...and bu&&ger Rog

Tyrone
How many of these posts have we had in the last two months. If anyone tells me crossflows are bomb proof I may not be responsible for my actions
DaveMorris
No - they're definitely bomb-proof. It's valve head and stems rattling round in the bores that they're not too keen on Dave
Tyrone
Thanks Dave, I can rely on you to keep it real, I laughed out loud for the first time in ages in relation to the car
DaveMorris
Tyrone - only speaking from experience. Rog N - Apologies for th eslight hi-jack. Now back to you. The only other ways that I can think of to get the oil/water to mix (having discounted head gasket) are not nice ☹️ Sorry. Dave.
edmandsd
Sounds like the bores may have broken through.......not uncommon even with the later AX blocks when you go over 86mm. The block is probably salvagable though with liners. Home of BDR700
Peter T
Only if you want to do a major oil re-route though If it breaks through the serving oil gallery between the 2nd and 3rd cylinder it can be a pain, as if you use liners that have to be much bigger than the bore size it drasticely reduces the oil gallery, so the only proper solution is to re-route it at the back of the block, otherwise oil pressure issues will affect the system. The other problem when you massively overbore the block is that it losses its strength and distorts even before new liners are pressed in, and it twists and is rendered scrap. I desrtoyed 2 blocks like this, and the 3rd needed line boring to bring it to within tolerance, and after one week it had twisted agin so was no good either. In the end i scrapped that. Leadership Team RogNeedham Posted July 7, 2005 Author Leadership Team Share Posted July 7, 2005 Having talked to Chris Wheeler earlier in the week, I quickly understood there could various other "not nice" permutations that could have caused the problem. As far as I'm concerned the engine was built by RK using his knowledge and experience and that's why I'm returning it to it's place of birth. Anthony and RobG know the spec - and it's not worth me meddling with an all-steel specialist engine such as this. Anyone takes a risk when going down this route - I'll just be patient and let the guys who know what they're on about advise me - the morphine is now starting to work and I'm feeling quite mellow about it ...until I see the bill Understand your point Tyrone but i'm not convinced any engine is completely bomb-proof particularly when you start to develop it. Anthony -early morning runs in the Peak District and Cadwell helped me to get used to it 😬 Now I just need you all to pray to the great engine god in the sky Rog
