fordy
On billies, will I need spring compressors? Am swapping the adjustable platforms from 1 set of billies to another and wondering if I will need some compressors?
Paul McKenzie
More than likely
Jason Plato
No you wont , Just unwind the platforms and the springs and seats will fall off in your hand C7 TOP Powered by Hellier Performance 😬 South Wales AO
fordy
but what about the other set that do not have adjustables. Do I need spring compressors to remove the fixed platform?
Stuart Faulds
You may need compressors for either set - it depends entirely on what rate and length of springs, and which position the seat is in.
Jason Plato
Ahhh now I thought you only had springs on one set of dampers 😬 As Paul and Stewart said - yes compressors will be needed to remove the fixed platforms

Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted February 14, 2005 Leadership Team Share Posted February 14, 2005 I did it slightly differently ...................... I am not suggesting you do it this way - it worked for me but has inherent dangers involved Whilst the car was under its' weight on the wheels, I tied the springs tightly with a number of lengths of climbers "prussic" cord - 6 to 7mm diameter was fine. On jacking the car up the springs became loose due to the springs not being allowed to extend - the cord goes BL**DY tight The springs can then be removed, and refitted with the adjustable platforms in place. Refit to the car, then remove the cords when the springs are re-compressed under the cars weight. This is the last time the cords are needed - subsequent removal can be done by adjusting the platforms Stu.
fordy
sounds hairy stu! have got myself access to some spring compressors....
Paul McKenzie
Fordy, Are your compressors 'special'? Very few if any of the conventional ones will fit Caterham springs Paul
fordy
guess i'll find out...
Dobuy
I put the bottom eye in a padded vice, used 4 cable ties, incrementally to compress the springs, then removed the platforms, pretty easy. mav
I lent Tricky Dicky my Sykes Pickvant compressors recently, and they are completely unmodified. He had no difficulty removing the springs using them apparently...
tricky dicky
Mav is right, I compressed the top part of the spring on each unit and the ali seat came away fairly easily, then the springs slid off the dampers. The adjustable platforms on my existing dampers- now thats another story! Regards Rich
luddites7
I have taken off standard dampers before with out sprin compressors as all the ones i could find wouldnt fit. Basically jacked each wheels up in turn to compress the spring up and then used three massive ty wraps (similar to the ones the police use) to hold the spring in compresses state, release the jack and the spring should be loose. Can take the damper off then cut the ty wraps - be careful your fingers arent in the way. Putting them back on to adjustable platforms means you dont need the compressors as they can be wound right out. PAUL MARRIOTT
Two tie wraps through the springs either side of the damper, two good sized screwdrivers through the spring between the damper and tie wrap (one either side), damper end on floor drivers wedged under something solid lever down, slip of collet from top, ease of pressure. Tap of mounting plate. Relocate circlip (a bit of shimming metal under the c'clip will stop it scratching the damper body) Did it last night *thumbup* - Do think of the risks before doing it. Next problem will be getting the damper eye off to fit the adj platforms - Clamp the damper stem in a GOOD vice between two bits of alluminium and TIGHTEN the vice HARD *eek* Get one of your good sized srewdrivers and wind off the damper eye, sorry try to wind off, tighten vice even more, try to wind off, get length of steel tube to increase leverage on vice, wind off eye. 😬 😬 Paul M

fordy
anyone know if this type of compressor http://www.tooled-up.com/Product.asp?PID=91520 or this type http://www.tooled-up.com/Product.asp?PID=13773 are the ones to go for for caterham springs? Paul McKenzie
Paul, The 'length of steel tube for winding off the damper eye' is actually called a Petty Strut ...very few people know how to use them properly 😳...I've even heard of some owners who try to fit them to an FIA bar Paul 😬
Paul McKenzie
Fordy, You've got more of a chance with the first ones...the critical bit is to have the claws as thin as possible. Paul
Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted February 15, 2005 Leadership Team Share Posted February 15, 2005 Have to disagree Paul - the Petty strut is used to tighten the vice Bloody great pair of plumbers stilsons is what you need for the eye Stu.
PAUL MARRIOTT
Fordy eye is the bush and mounting for the bush on the end of the damper stem, you have to take it off to fit the adj platforms, the circlip by the way should be dropped to the centre groove. Don't listen to the rest they are just being petty *wink* Paul M
