Billy.Whizz
Can anyone advise me what is the best product to remove number plate sticky pads from a carbon fibre nose cone please.Bill.
Member Jonathan Kay Posted March 16, 2022 Member Share Posted March 16, 2022 Gentle warmth and a length of dental floss used as a saw.If there's any residue then soak in WD-40 and try rolling it away from an edge rather than scraping.Jonathan
Benton
I find Autoglym Tar Remover will remove 99.9% of residual stuck on gunge, shouldn't attack carbon but try on hidden part first to be sure.
Member Jonathan Kay Posted March 16, 2022 Member Share Posted March 16, 2022 Autoglym Tar Remover contains xylene. That can strip surfaces and I always try and stay as low in the hierarchy of solvents as possible. Jonathan
Billy.Whizz
I use xylene as part of my recipe for making wax lube for my bicycle chains, it's a very strong thinners but also used as a cleaning agent, but I don't think I'll use it on the carbon. Benton
They say ignorance is bliss, however having just read the "fact sheet" for Autoglym Tar Remover I certainly won't be splashing it around as I have in the past ! Its like when I was at school during chemistry lessons handling benzene and toluene, no precautions or warnings, it was only years later when I worked in industry that you realised that wasn't the right thing to do! I always remember the physics teacher with the Mercury spilling all over the bench and watching the silver balls go everywhere ......
Beagler
Sticky stuff remover or nail varnish remover or isopropyl alchohol.
Neil220
Nail varnish remover is mostly Acetone, which is a strong organic solvent, it could damage the resins used in some carbon fibres.I'd recommend surgical spirit.
ScottR400D
Many nail varnish removers use acetone as a solvent. Acetone is a commonly used thinner in car paints. Not to be recommended. Edit: Beaten to it!
Member Jonathan Kay Posted March 16, 2022 Member Share Posted March 16, 2022 Nail varnish remover used to be based on acetone. Ethyl acetate is now common.Acetone is probably the most overused solvent in car workshops, often in products such as brake cleaner....The last time that I looked I couldn't find any evidence that proprietary products sold for removing sticky residue were better than WD-40. bstark
I normally use HG Sticker Remover, pretty sure it is petroleum based but anyway it works really well
