A7 OOH Posted September 29, 2020 Posted September 29, 2020 I need to replace the lower wishbone bushes on a 94 Classic SE. Understand these to be Y9 bushes. What is the easiest sequence to do this job with the minimum of stripping down. The anti roll bar bushes also need replacing but this is straight forward again Y9 bushes. Gordon
Area Representative Geoff Brown Posted September 30, 2020 Area Representative Posted September 30, 2020 Basically the lower wishbone will have to come out. You could get away with just disconnecting the wishbone from the upright, supporting the upright then removing the two mounting bolts & shim washers to remove wishbone.Good luck with removing the old bushes. Patience, blunt force trauma & a degree of ingenuity may be required.
TomB Posted September 30, 2020 Posted September 30, 2020 If you going to the effort of removing the wishbones to replace the rubber bushes, its worth considering replacing the spherical bearings for the upright at the other end of the wishbone. These are held in by a circlip and probably need some violence if old and seized.
7 wonders of the world Posted September 30, 2020 Posted September 30, 2020 press, saw or otherwise remove the bushes - depending upon age, same with the spherical joint, re powder coat, fit new spherical joint and then replace the cheap metalastic bushes with powerflex nd remove all the parasitic stiction in the suspension.
A7 OOH Posted September 30, 2020 Author Posted September 30, 2020 Thanks I will take on board your comments.
elie boone Posted October 1, 2020 Posted October 1, 2020 94 chassis should have metalistic bushes but it's easy to spot, if you have a 1/2" nut on the front lower wishbone then it's metalistic, if it's a small bolt the you have Y9 bushes.
A7 OOH Posted October 1, 2020 Author Posted October 1, 2020 I will check out metalistic or or Y9 although looking at them showing perished rubber I would think Y9.
Wrightpayne Posted October 2, 2020 Posted October 2, 2020 Y9s dont have an outer metal sleeve so should be much easier. I helped Tazio reassemble his BDR which had a similar ARB / top link arrangement and IIRC the ARB rubbers into the top link were a bit of a fight but not too bad. You need a bit of lube!
A7 OOH Posted October 2, 2020 Author Posted October 2, 2020 A good job for the winter if and when the car comes off the road
Area Representative Geoff Brown Posted October 2, 2020 Area Representative Posted October 2, 2020 If you decide to change the lower spherical bearings don't forget to remove the circlip first then soak in WD40 or Plus Gas over a cuppa. Use bearing lock when fitting the replacements.
Wrightpayne Posted October 2, 2020 Posted October 2, 2020 It has trunions (had a conversation via PM)
A7 OOH Posted October 2, 2020 Author Posted October 2, 2020 Thanks GeoffI also have a 1800 K series so the information is appreciated
