Failed emissions test.

1.8k series vvc. Failed it's MOT today .

What do I do now? Do I just buy a new catalytic converter or is it something that can mapped out?

I cannot offer you any help, but just to say that my year 2000 1.8 VVC has never had to have one. I even had to change the place I normal use this year, and it was not even mentioned

What did it fail on? For example lambda is probably an air leak so is unlikely to be fixed by a new cat.

I just had this on my MOT this week. Failed due to a leak on the end cap - taped it up and retested and it went through just fine.

The location of the Lambda sensor doesn't help, they struggle to get really hot enough on the cat pipe.

Nothing wrong with the car it's something wrong with the MOT centre not being friendly enough  

Someone should be along with some help shortly ...........

Had a similar problem last year. Tester just let the engine get up to temp till it passed.

Yes CAT needs to be hot to pass.
