Area Representative Geoff Brown Posted March 14, 2015 Area Representative Share Posted March 14, 2015 While carrying out the pre-season service on my R400 & during the security & torque loading check I found excessive wear in the rear ARB Drop Links. The collective play in each link was close to 1mm. Car is two years old & 7000 miles.Any one else had this problem in such a short time?Having previously owned a 1.6 K Srs @ 155BHP for 11 years & no problems with the links this came as a bit of a surprise. With a standard Radius Arm set up I would presume the forces at the back are more fluidly controlled & more equally divided but with the Watts Linkage restraining the deDion there must be more forces directed to the ARB that the linkage does not cope with when controlling the up & down/roll plane of the tube.If this is correct then I can expect to change drop links on a bi-annual basis?! CharlesElliott
It doesn't particularly surprise me - do you have grease on the balls? In my epxerience it is not the droplinks that wear, but the balls - so just replacing the balls does the job. John Vine
There's a discussion here about a beefed-up drop link.JV
SM25T
They are a bit of a consumable item ... like the rod end bearings on the Watts Linkage.
Dr Slotter
Just had a feel of mine and there is a merest hint of play. They've been on the car for two years and the ones they replaced definitely had a significant amount of play (they were probably 4 years old). Q Catcher
Yep, they wear. Each pre-MoT check involves taking them apart, filling the sockets with Copaslip, reassembling them and wiping off the excess Copaslip.

Area Representative Geoff Brown Posted March 18, 2015 Author Area Representative Share Posted March 18, 2015 Decided that Lithium grease is the way to go so I don't have to change them too early...I hope!
