Redbullwings
Does anyone have a copy of the low flying heater mod you can email me or piston here? I've just changed to silicone hoses and have he classic airlock. I've been through the archive and followed the filling tips but after my second attempt I've still got air in the block. I even pulled the thermostat housing out slightly till fluid came out then shoved it back in sharp ish. I would really love to sort this one without having to resort to my local specialist. Roadsport06
Have you fitted a bleed tee? Getting it fitted at the highest point makes refilling easy. If you do this then you can do your last filling from here so no air lock. (Make sure your heater valve is open too, easy to forget with the nice weather as mine is closed to just blow cool air. Most local owners will be happy to help you if you get stuck Edited by - Roadsport06 on 2 Aug 2014 18:05:
john milner
I have changed my coolant twice without any problems. Front jacked up. Heater valve open. Remove bolt from top of rad. Disconnect top hose from heater. Poor in coolant and smoothly as possible to reduce glugging. Once satisified the system is full refit heater hose. Several squeezes of top and bottom rad hoses. Top up if needed. Refit bolt. More squeezes. Top up if needed.
Member Jonathan Kay Posted August 2, 2014 Member Share Posted August 2, 2014 Have you drilled the hole in the thermostat? (I haven't done the modification, haven't drilled the hole and my bleed tee is still in a box. I don't know why experiences differ.) Redbullwings
I have fitted the t piece and opened the heater, intact I used it as the rad with the fan on to help keep the temp down on my short trip round the block. On my short test run I managed to get another half litre in it but am still about half a litre short. Does a 3mm hole in the thermostat normally sort things out? Member Jonathan Kay Posted August 2, 2014 Member Share Posted August 2, 2014 Do you know that you've got air in the block, or only that you've added less coolant than expected? Jonathan
Stationary M25 Traveller
I have pdf copy .... but not home from Germany until Monday night.
Redbullwings
I'm pretty sure it's air in the block as the thermostat isn't kicking in. That coupled with the fact that I'm short on coolant points at an Air lock. Top of rad and heater get hot but bottom rad hose is cold. I'm on holiday this week so Monday would be perfect if you could manage to email the PDF Thanks Doug

Mucus72
Hi all BTTT as I'm having similar problems too. Please could someone blatmail me the thermostat mod info too? Also, although I have bleed tee fitted and want to fill from the top hose by the heater, my radiator is the cheaper plastic top and bottomed crimped jobbie. Would you recommend that I fill via tee with expansion bottle cap off and thermostat out (seeing as there is no rad top filler) or use pressure release valve hole next to thermostat, then quickly jam that on when starting to overflow? It' seems a bit annoying that there isn't a top bolt on the rad.
Stationary M25 Traveller
The hole is not in the housing. Send me a BlatMail and I'll return a photo aha .. seen your address. Give me a moment Edited by - SM25T on 16 Aug 2014 21:16:
Mucus72
Thanks Ian. I've sent you a BM. if you have a copy of the thermostat hole mod PDF too, that would also be much appreciated. Marcus
Stationary M25 Traveller
Marcus. The photo shows the hole you drill in the thermostat baseplate. There are no holes to the outside world. Further mail sent
john milner
As not all K engines have a filling problem does it mean there is more than one "standard" for the plumbing?
Ozzy
I'm with you John. I really don't understand why some people seem to have trouble, and feel the need to add bleed tees, holes in thermostat etc. I must have changed the coolant more than half a dozen times for various reasons over the years, and have never had a problem Like you say, nose in the air, massage hoses, jobs a good un! The only mod I've ever made to the cooling system is changing the thermostat from 88 to 82 many years ago. It's a bit like the gearbox oil, I've only ever used the usual recommended stuff when changing it in my 6 speed, and it's always been fine. Seems to me, that some people are now finding out that the wonder potion known as Redline MTL, may not be all it's cracked up to be! Sometimes things are better left alone. Oz.
