Quiet road speed knock from rear when free wheeling...

Since the track evening at Brands Hatch last Tuesday, I've noticed a relatively quiet knock knock knock noise at what seems to be wheel / road speed when approaching junctions etc. I can only hear it when I depress the clutch and under about 30mph. I can't seem to hear it when the car is under gentle power or decellarating with the engine - even if done really gently.

It sounds a bit like the metallic sound of the play in the diff but it is perfectly regular if the road speed remains the same.

I spoke to Road and Race who suggested I check that the shafts to the rear wheels centralise against a spring as it can become unseated or break but the shafts spring back. I have rotated the wheels whilst it's on axle stands but can't detect anything.

The car is a 2000 1.8 VVC Dedion with a 6 sped box and a Titan LSD fitted.

Anyone have any ideas?

Many thanks.

Checked both but no luck. I had another good look and prod around and can't find anything. I think a trip to my local Seven specialist is in order...

Quoting SM25T:
Just re-read OP .......Clutch release bearing or spring in clutch ?

I thought about clutch but wouldn't that be at a faster speed due to the ratio of the diff? It does sound like a road speed noise in its repetition rate.

It does sound like it's coming from just behind me but car sounds have a habit of not being where you think they are!

Wheel nuts all good as are discs.

I need to get myself a grease gun to do the prop shaft UJs. It all feels fine though.

The only bit of movement I have noticed is on the near side drive shaft. I can move the shaft up and down a bit. The movement feels like it's in the UJ at the diff end. I tried moving the offside one but it feels solid with no movement at all.

I'm kind of grasping at straws now though...

Thanks for all the suggestions. It booked in for a quick look / listen so I'll see what pans out I think.

Hi Leebert *wavey*

Are you sure it's not brake pads rattling. I convinced myself that something was horribly wrong with the drive train then Tim at Sevens and classics suggested that I check the pads....he was right *smokin*. One of my discs is very slightly warped just enough to cause the pads to rattle. I can only hear it at low speeds purely as wind/tyre/engine and other caterhamesque noises drown it out the rest of the time. I still have to reassure myself occasionally by lightly left foot braking when cruising in a 30!

Hope you get it sorted soon whatever it is.

Tom
