To hopefully improve reliability and MAYBE improve fuel consumption and performance I’ve just put an electronic ignition (previously points, condenser etc) on our 1970s, 2.25 Lightweight Land Rover. I’ve also put a new gold coil on, HT leads and about to fit a new set of plugs
It always ran perfectly before BUT it never needed choke to start it and it guzzled fuel (I appreciate it’s never going to be efficient!).
This would suggest the mixture was too rich but the spark plugs were perfect?!
After changing the ignition I was expecting to have to adjust the timing. However, it started on the button and seems to run perfectly, no misfire, pinking or anything else. I left the timing as it was.
So, given I’m an amateur do I mess around and play with the mix or because the plugs are perfect do I just leave it alone? Why don’t I need the choke?! Maybe on a cold day in winter the choke will help but it will start whatever.....
If it’s not broken shall I just leave it
