  1. I had the gearbox rebuilt by SPC with their Tracsport semi helical Type 9 kit, 2.48 1st and I kept the 0.82 5th as its a road car with a few track days a year. If I was doing it now I'd opt for the fully helical Sport Touring set, as the semi helical one is very noisy in 2nd and 3rd (reminds me of a ride I once had in an old armoured personel carrier), but it wasn't available at the time.
  2. I fitted a TTV Racing flywheel to an EU2 VVC a few years ago, very happy with it. Difficult to draw a direct comparison because I changed the gear ratios at the same time but definitely made the engine feel more responsive. http://ttvracing.com/product/caterham-k-series-lite/?referrer=product-listing&iframe=true&width=80%&height=100%&type=flywheels&engine=caterham-1-4-1-6-1-8-k-series&manufacturer=caterham I reused the standard AP clutch plate as when I measured it there was only 20% wear. I don't know how many miles it had done, there were 59k on the car at the time of which 11k were during my ownership. The original Rover clutch cover bolts did not fit the new flywheel, see https://www.lotus7.club/forum/techtalk/clutch-pressure-plate-lightweight-flywheel-bolt-size for details.
  3. Are you stripping down the engine to rebuild it? Try heating it up with a blowtorch to soften it and lever from the bottom where you can spread the load over more of the plate area perhaps? For reassembly Minispares do an uprated engine gasket set but I've no personal experience of using it (yet). I did cure a persistent rocker cover gasket leak by using the Minispares silicone gasket, I found the cork ones leaked despite careful installation. Apparently ancient legends speak of mythical leak free A series but I've never seen one. Currently restoring my 1275GT and like Stu would be interested to hear more about your car. We'll end up with our own sub forum before long.
  4. I bought MOC569A from Demon Tweeks to replace the old seal on the Mocal sandwich plate for the Apollo pipes. Looks like the same part as Merlin.
  5. Not as good as physical gauges but the Thread Pitch app on Android is handy to have for identifying bolt threads.
  6. From the LV/Britannia Rescue t&c list of exclusions: 9. Breakdown and recovery assistance for vehicles involved in sporting events including racing, pacemaking, speed testing, rallies, trials and all other track based activities or practising for any such events, and those involved in leisure off road events. Through Nationwide I've used the service several times without problem but this will push me to look elsewhere and ditch the Flex Plus account now.
  7. There's a special place in hell for people who don't flush cut cable ties, leaving wiring looms like rose bushes.
  8. I ran the wires for my heated seats along the top of the tunnel and out underneath the back of the tunnel cover. The switches are in the tunnel top forward of the gear lever. This was an aftermarket kit though, not supplied by Caterham.
  9. https://www.halfords.com/workshop-tools/tools/hand-tools/halfords-3-piece-locking-extension-bar-set-3-8-drive Handy for the spark plug socket rubber insert problem and plenty of other tight situations where the sockets tend to get knocked off the end of the bar and down the back of somewhere very inaccessible.
  10. The right kind of plastic is fine with petrol. Think of all the things that use plastic petrol tanks, including cars.
  11. As you say, with cheap digital measuring equipment it's the repeatability of the individual units that often isn't very good. Could you not fashion your own hardness tester? Something that applies a known force for a known time through a known size stylus. A weight, a lever and a ball bearing together with a depth mic to measure the indent might work well enough just for relative measurements.
  12. Do you have a buzzer? If so you may already have the diodes connected to it. I fitted an LED light in the dash but couldn't run the LED and the buzzer off the same diodes so fitted extra ones. However, after a while I found the LED was far more effective at reminding me that an indicator was on than the buzzer so I removed it. So if there is a buzzer present you could remove it and connect the LED up to the old buzzer wiring.
  13. I had a heavily stained block vapour blasted at a local motorcycle restorers. Expensive but the results were excellent. https://www.lotus7.club/forum/techtalk/liner-heights-took-far-too-much-block
  14. The lever type valve spring compressor tools can be bought pretty cheaply on ebay. I briefly considered this method when I had a failed stem seal but in the end removed the head to replace all 16.
  15. There were a range of different heater cores used in the Mini over the years but the one that fits the late 90's Caterham heater was aluminium and plastic. http://minispares.com/product/Classic/Cooling_heating/Heating/Heater_matrix/BAU5043.aspx Of course some aftermarket replacements may use other materials.
  16. I bought a Ford dipstick from the Fiesta mentioned, a big improvement over the K series type. It is also the same dipstick Caterham fit to the Sigma, Ford part number 1207160.
  17. Have you tried http://jrwebster.co.uk for fasteners? There's several branches around the northwest. Check the height of any new nyloc nuts compared to the originals, Caterham seem to use low profile ones in lots of places so a full height nut can be too long to engage the nylon.
  18. Did you end up getting your driveshafts refurbished Tom? I've got the same older type as you and have noticeable play in the outer joint of one. It seems pretty mad to have to scrap the whole driveshaft. If you have any information on where I might get parts I'd be grateful if you could pass them on.
  19. If using a remote coil pack & HT leads, rather than the EU3 coil on plug setup, why not use the EU2 VVC coil pack and leads? It bolts to the block under the inlet manifold.
  20. Nowhere near as good as a physical thread gauge set but the Thread Pitch app on Android is handy for helping with quick identification.
  21. The original mirror is a Ford part used in various models including the mk1 Ka.
  22. Last year I replaced a set of the Cibie H180 lenses with a set of cheapo ebay freeform reflector units I found in the loft. Same Osram Nightbreaker bulbs. Much prefer the freeform reflectors, although I suspect the beam pattern isn't great, as they better illuminate a wider area and subjectively seem brighter from the drivers seat.
  23. https://www.demon-tweeks.com/uk/smiths-telemetrix-mechanical-oil-pressure-gauge-270878/ As it is a Smiths gauge it may be possible for Caerbont to build one using the Caterham face.
  24. I know this is 1/2" UNC external thread but that has a smaller minor diameter than UNF so yes it can be done. https://www.ezlok.com/ezlok-insert-329-524
  25. EU2 VVC leads might fit. They are HT leads that connect the plugs to a coil pack underneath the inlet manifold so the cable length will be longer than necessary but the ends should be correct.
