  1. I didn't get on with the Ledas. They were great on the track but no so good on the road - it's really bumpy where I live. I ended up back on Bilsteins running different springs. I ought to try the Ledas again on the new springs to be fair. The confusing thing about the Leads is that as you get past setting 7 they only ramp up the rebound. Until click 7 they increase both bump and rebound. Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs

    Zetec jetting

Can I get some wisdom on suitable jetting for DCOS 45s on a standard 2.0 ltr zetec please? I apear to have 155 F6 130 (where the 130 is a the squirty end of the mains and the 155 at the top) - just call me a layman! Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs
  3. Cn you try someone elses Bilsteins on your car - I suspect they'll make one hell of a difference. There's so much to go wrong with replacement dampers. Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs
  4. Whn eI spoke to Hyperion ages ago they said they'd tried Penske dampers and they were good but needed alot of work to get the valving right and were considered too expensive to b offered as an option so they ceased work on them Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs
  5. If you've never done it yet - I'd check the engine mounts which get decidedly oft over time (mainly those under the carbs) - they're not expensive and once changed you'll see why it was worth doing. Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs

    Oversteering 7

Just check that you've got 35mm or so of rebound travel and lots of bump available. If you run out of rebound (droop) you might get over steer problems as a result. (One wheel lifts) Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs
  8. I can see why your status is anorak. Which springs are you talking about the progressives? Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs
  9. Call me Steve with any of these questions will you?! Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs
  10. I have to use the lower mount as the damprs are too long for the higher one. (otherwise the tube fouls the chassis. Mike- if I fit 170lb spring, do you know what length it should be? Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs
  11. I assume there is a standard swap in terms of spring length. Do you know what that length is? Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs
  12. When you fit linear springs to a car previously fitted with the progressive spring, do you use the old style central dedion tube holes to pick up on or do you get a long spring and use the lower ones still? Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs

    Shell Optimax

In CCC recently they put an article that describes the new fuel. Apparently one of its main properties is that it cleans the valves up thus allowing better breathing (that's aside from the octane). doesn't seem cheap though. Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs
  14. I think that it's important to bear in mind where the temperature is being read (i.e. immediately behind the cylinder head. More important I would think is the temprature that enters the engine. My water heats up very quickly when I boot it but as soon as it's done one circuit of the radiator it cools quite quickly. Looks really odd though. Mine runs at about 92degC ll the time. Water in should be at around 80 I think. not sure if my gauge works correctly though. What gauge do other people use? 15. Chris: My 92 spec car has a different damper valving to that of a 96 car (assume that yours has the same as mine had). The longer damper body indicates that you're looking at the newer valving with that damper so you'll get what you got. The latest dampers to replace yours from Caterham have the new valving too so just replace them with newer items but understand why they'll be better. The car will be transformed. 16. Can anyone supply me a contact that can provide evidence that to fit unidirectional tyres on the front you should fit them with the arrows backwards? Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs
  17. Get shot for this but how much for the stays and what condition are they in? Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs

    Exhaust Options

for info My old xflow (135)used to give 100dB at Castle coombe on a side exit Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs
  20. Have you checked that the thermostat allows some water past itself to the rad? I.e. it should have a small hole in its circumference to allow this. Without it in normal running you get very odd behaviour. It may be that your new thermostat does not have this hole and thus you get very little circulation. You need the circulation to allow the switch to see hot water and open. I've never had trouble bleeding my old xflow so I doubt that's your problem. Don't have a blown head gasket do you? compression check? Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs
  21. If you're referring to fuel pumps I've had one from James Whiting. About £30 (from Weber concessionaires I think), very quiet in operation and Steve Foster also uses one on his VX with no troubles. I'd have to recommend it! Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs
  22. No expert here but I thought that received wisdom rated a 4:2:1 manifold over the 4:1 for a K? Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs
  23. ok. Perhaps I should clear some things up. The engine is on 45s. It has already been setup by Dunnell for power and ran fine when I first had it. Since then I've meddled with the idle jets and learnt about the potential 5th progression hole. A friend has set up his engine idle (which does affect all the rev range) using plug colour - which for idle seems just fine to me (assuming I can do this with my ignition) and he's had good results. Is the VX wasted spark? As to carb balance, I've no problems there as I already have a sychronisateur as I recall it being named. I've no problem with anything I've been told so far. I just want to know about colour testing versus wasted spark really. The colour tune idea is interesting. Is it designed for throttle response though or is it for economy? If you use one of these does it use the original spark plug or a surrogate one and do you need to richen the mixture after its use. It might be worth experimenting with it if you ever go the North Hants and Berks meet in Hartney Wintney? Other than that I'll richen the two misfit white plugs for the moment. Thanks to all so far. 24. The only problem I had with mine was that it worked too well. It took me ages to discnnect ti from my loom when I changed engines - basically I ruined the Vecta socket and you can't get replacements. Until then I'd done 20K miles over 5 years and no problems at all. Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs
  25. Thakns for the info all. I'm happy with the main etc. The progression has 4 holes only which I'll invstigate getting changed. I still don't know whether I can use plug colour to tune this engine though, or what the differnce from white to light brown is or what I should aim for. Any additional advice on this specifically? wHATEVER ARE YOU DOING ON THE LIST OVER THERE Steve? PS, could od with using your lathe when you get back (ride height troubles continued - I aslo have a large lump of ally for the gearknob) Edited by - millsn on 27 Aug 2001 00:07:40
