  1. When I installed a new half shaft I cooled down the shaft and warmed up the bearing and just dropped the new bearing onto the shaft until it hit the ridge and then installed all the components and slid in the shaft. When I finished the drum only just covered the break shoes and left a large (3/16”) gap between the drum edge and the back plate. When compared to the other side you could see something was wrong but it seamed to work OK so I left it the way it was, now I’m into a spring work over and am trying to see whats wrong. Fist I thought I needed to take up the slop behind the back plate with a shim since it looks like there shims in there already, and I started looking for shims but it turns out the bearing needs to be pushed up closer to the hub and that will allow the drum to totally cover the shoes with a tighter gap. Plus it now allows the shaft to float whereas before I guess it couldn’t float at all. Hope that helps Graeme
  2. What is an English axle? Is it the same as an Ital? Im looking for new oil seals for my Live Axle Ital and trying to find part numbers if any one has any code numbers or knows where to find them I would appreciate some help. Thanks Graeme
  3. Looks like I assembled it wrong I spoke to Steve Perks at SPC and he advised that the bearing needs to be positioned 3mm up from the taper and closer to the hub. This would now allow the drum to slide right over the brake shoes - right now the drum only just covers the shoes. So shims are not needed Thanks anyhow Graeme Edited by - GeeWiz1 on 31 Mar 2005 16:03:48
  4. Anyone know where to get the shims for positioning the drum assembly on a Ital live axel? They are abou 4.5" square with 4 holes in them. Thanks Graeme
  5. No its not the standard aluminum tank its the Caterham Fuel Cell (flexible fuel cell) Thats my problem Thanks for the restrictor tip Still looking for help Graeme
  6. I'm in the process of converting from side draft webers to Jenvey TB's and I'm using a swirl pot system for handling the fueling system however the Caterham Fuel cell in my car doesn’t allow me any place to put the return into the tank Can I use the VENT pipe 🤔 and put some kind of vent devise in the filler cap 🤔 Intrested in hearing how other people might have overcome this Thanks Graeme Naperville IL USA
  7. I have a Quaif LSD that I got from SPC a couple of years ago and I'm replacing the half shaft because of the (common) bearing slipping problem. The new Half shaft from Caterham has a larger spline O/D by about 0.010" and wont go into the diff ☹️. I thought I would just try to grind down the O/D to suite the older half shaft. Is this new or has anybody else had a similar problem? . I kept the original dif and the new shaft goes in with out any broblems but not into the LSD Thanks Graeme Naperville IL USA
  8. I’m converting to FI from Webers on my Zetec and building the wire harness myself . The AMP Timer connectors are not used here in the US and these connectors are hard to get and the crimping tool and die sets are 14 weeks lead time from Tyco?? ☹️ Does any one have any suggestions for crimping tools? Is there something else out there that works just as well? Thanks Graeme Naperville, IL USA
  9. A Stiffer Spring Eh! OK sounds like an easy thing to try - I will contact SPC and see if I can get one Thanks for the tip
  10. I have the same gearbox and have put about 5,000 miles on since new in two seasons. Found it very stiff at the beginning and now its starting to loosen up, part of that stiffness might have been that I just used a good quality gear oil – and in August this year I put some Redline oil in and what a difference it has made I guess it just works the syncro’s better. I also put some grease on the gear leaver mechanism as well, I have a short shifter that probably makes if a little stifferl. However I do have a nagging problem with it jumping out of 3 gear when breaking on the engine. Its not very comforting going head first into a corner and loosing power and I still haven’t figured out what’s causing this its happening to many times to assume I just didn’t put it in 3rd correctly. I have a 1.8 Zetec on 40’s with upgraded cams and on 13” wheels and find that I have to give it a lot of throttle to pull away quickly from the lights I have to keep the rev’s over 3,000 and don’t let them drop below that. I’m sure with the extra torque provided by on injection system this would be improved 1st is great once it gets going 2nd is very very very good nothing can beat it. I can’t comment on the noise as it’s the only one I have had – I just need to figure out why it drops out of third? ☹️
  11. Yes about 700 is the right number. Give Steve Perks a call at SP Components Check the links page for the number and web link Graeme novice
  12. I installed one in a Iltal last year and it was a piece of cake and took less than 4 hours. I used the Quaife unit that SP Components sell its came as one big lump and realy easy to install all you have to do is : 1. Put car on stands 2. Disconnect the A frame and swing the frame away. 3. Take out the prop shaft bolts and push the shaft up and out of the way 4. Remove wheels and drums 5. Remove the break pads 6. Undo the 4 bolts holding the hub onto the Axel and slide out the half shaft about 50 mm so it disengages from the dif 7. Remove the bolts around the diff and crack open at the bottom - catch the old oil 8. Remove the diff as on big lump 9. Replace with new LSD lump You might want to slide the half shafts out and clean them up a bit and take a look in the diff housing and clean that out depending on how old yours is. but thts all there is to it. Make a big difference coming out of the corners - there's no comparison. Graeme
  13. ☹️ Ok I have the half shaft out and I can see the bearing and it’s the bearing that is floating back and forth. The race on the shaft just slides back and forth 1/8”, I don’t think its supposed to do that. Does any one know what might have happened here? Thanks Graeme
  14. I just put my live axel (Ital) Caterham up on jack stands and noticed that the left rear axel shaft is floating in and out 3/16” , the right side is tight with no noticeable movement. In the spring I fitted a LSD and I’m now thinking that I must have upset something. Does anybody have any idea what might have gone wrong and what I should do to fix this? ☹️ Thanks
