  1. If you'r going to fit a mechanical guage, which is far better IMHO, why not get a dual function one that shows oil temp as well. Very useful.
  2. Simon, I have fitted an airbox to my VX and there is a big reduction in noise. Not that I wanted it quieter, I got it to protect the filter from the sand that blows around here. If you send me a mail I will send you a photo and details. Mike.
  3. Steve, re picture I promised, there does not appear to be any way to attach a file when mailing from the website, so either could you drop me a mail to give me your address, or you can see the car at www.hydrojettingonline.com click on the "like cars?" link. Regards, Mike.
  4. Steve, will mail photos when I get home tomorrow. Mike.
  5. Steve, I have fitted stainless steel vents to my footwells, and they work very well. They are available from boat suppliers and come with a closable vent that can be fitted inside. I can mail a picture if you like. Mike.
  6. Some gentle heating softens it up to allow easier removal.
  7. Ian, you are correct of course about your Blackbird powered car, but there are also power to weight issues at work there. I was merely commenting on the original post requesting opinions on a choice between a 2.0L or 2.3L Duratech. Mike.
  8. I am also in this decision making process right now, and believe it will be the 2.3 route. High revs only equal more stress/higher wear rates, high torque equals better acceleration, and thats what's fun in a seven. Just got a quote from Raceline, and the prices for 250/260HP 2.0 litre, and 260/270HP 2.3 litre are so close it does'nt matter. What does matter in my opinion is that the 2.3 litre gives a whopping 210 Lb.ft of torque at only 6,000 RPM. Torque/traction control where it should be, under your right foot!
  9. Marius, I was at Raceline recently checking out Duratec possibilities, and they are using a Ford slave cylinder which is apparently very good, looks quite compact and light too. Might be an alternative if you do suffer problems.
  10. Mike, be careful with any colour that comes close to the flourescent yellow/green that the fire brigade and some of the security forces have here, it's illegal to have the same colour as them. Bright orange should be OK though and I believe that you can get anti UV laquer to combat fading, most of the better paint shops will know about this. Any ides on where you will get the job done? It's something I need to do maybe early next summer. Mike.
  11. The VX dosen't need it, but it's a lot of FUN! I enjoy mine.
  12. Go for the torque and get a Duratec. There will be far less problems in ftting it, and there are more resources available in terms of engine builders, and parts required to get it into a seven.
  13. Get a good road map and forget the motorway in favour of some good A and B roads!
  14. Neil, to beat Steve, and now also Mike, I would need to employ a good driver! OK guys, I will try them and report back. Edited by - Mike Biddle on 25 Jan 2004 05:42:20 Edited by - Mike Biddle on 25 Jan 2004 05:42:55
  15. With the handbrake attachment are in production and should be ready for delivery mid Feb. I got their new catalog today and they list at 180 pounds each, plus pads of your choice and FAT of course. Intrestingly, they have designed this feature into all of their calipers for rear end use. I will be ordering, anybody have any views on whether or not to go for vented discs, or use the originals? If anybody wants a copy of the page I can scan & e-mail.
  16. Harry is correct, I have 280MM solid discs with the racing 4 calipers, very powerful and good control due to bigger dia discs. No problems so far (after two years). Ben, the cost as you say is about the same, but I saved 0.5 KG each side over the standard brakes, so there will be a bigger weight saving over the Caterham big brake set up. Hi Specs quality is very good but they can be slow in responding. Incidently, the long awaited rear two pot caliper with handbrake connection is in production and should be ready for delivery by mid to end Feb. It's in their new catalog at 180 pounds + the dreaded FAT. Don't all rush at once now, I want mine first. I will post a seperate thread on this as well.
  17. Arnie, yes, you're correct re altenator position, on left drive cars it has to be on inlet side.
  18. I fitted the Hi Spec ultralites with aluminium bells and 280MM solid disc. Monster braking power with a lot of control due to bigger dia disc. Recommended!
  19. AVES, if you fit the pump on the inlet side it has to be modified (with a grinder) otherwise it will not fit under the engine mount. It will also severley restrict your access to the altenator adjusting bolt, I had to fabricate a new altenator mounting to allow me to adjust it. Is your car left drive? if not, it's probably a lot easier to put the pump on the exhaust side. My car is left drive so it had to go on the inlet side. My system came from SBD and works well.
  20. Hi Spec are developing a system which will allow vented rear discs, and retain the existing style handbrake connection. Should be ready soon I hope because I want to git it myself.
  21. 1. No problem to fit the engine/gearbox first. 2. Probably better to leave the ear end untill diff fitted. 3. Fitting exhaust primaries after fitting engine is the correct proceedure. 4. The biggest problem here is sand and dust getting into everything, recommend you fit a boot cover, or you will be shovelling sand out of it on a regular basis. If you need a hand anytime, give me a call, I have my own worhshop here with plenty of tools, mechanics, truck etc.(in Al Quoz) Mike.
  22. Kasi, I had a problem here in Dubai with legs and feet getting "coorked" and resolved it by fitting air scoops on the sides of the footwells. Since the airflow over cockpit, and screen if you have one creates a negative pressure, there is a very powerfull blast of ambient air generated for cooling. Works very well, but requires some minor surgery. e-mail me if you want a picture.
  23. Gareth, what is the weight of this engine?
  24. I have the Quaife unit, it is noisy but then the whole car is not exactly quiet, and it is rough at low speeds, but since thats a situation I avoid if at all possible, who cares! No problems with it either. Next year the whole car will be refurbished, with engine change (to Duratec), and since this will save more than several KG's I am tempted to try the Elite box as well. If I do, then the Quaife unit will be up for sale.
  25. Oops, that's not the headlights, just the reflection of a camera flash in the indicators! Sorry folks, my only excuse is withdrawl simptoms, having not spe.... er invested any capital in my car for 2 whole years, and now finding out I can't fit the freestyle suspension (too old.. the car, not me!) Of course I can always send it back to UK and get Arch to fit the later front end,..... and that would fix the hole in the side that appeared after racing with those evil bikers and the altenator fan disintegrating, .... is their a shrink in the club ranks?
