  1. Have you thought about trying softer compound front tyres? When I switched from A021Rs to A048Rs I went for Soft compound on the fronts and Medium compounds on the rears. This has transformed the car and I am a lot happier with the handling which feels a whole lot more "pointy" than it used to. Ian 😬 1.6K SS Superlight #006 Penn Sevens Here
  2. Alan, Your approach sounds like it will be the ultimate solution 😬 Unfortunately, I don't have the rear pickup points so my effort wasn't as effective. I Look forward to seeing your new and improved car at Penn (although I may not make it this month). Ian 😬 1.6K SS Superlight #006 Penn Sevens Here
  3. I wasn't happy with the idea of using the floor plus channels to support the seats. I extended the seat rails to pick up on the chassis cross member just in front of the seats and added some additional support to the bulkhead behind the seats. 4. Fri or Sat is fine, Tyrone. I've Blatmailed you pickup details and you should get my email address as well. Ian 😬 1.6K SS Superlight #006 Penn Sevens Here

  9. Stu, thanks very much. Photos are perfect - exactly the kind of solution I was looking for! Ian 😬 1.6K SS Superlight #006 Penn Sevens Here
  10. Stu, Do you happen to have a photo showing how you have mounted your microswitch rigged to the belt tensioner pulley? I have a microswitch sitting at home, but haven't worked out the most elegant way of mounting it yet! Thanks in advance. Ian 😬 1.6K SS Superlight #006 Penn Sevens Here

    A048's v A021's

Ran A021Rs for several years, but switched to A048Rs (Soft fronts/Medium rears) last year. The A048Rs are a huge improvement IMO both in the dry and (mildly) wet. The 48s seem to break away much more progressively and the overall grip level is significantly increased. Turn-in is now improved beyond all recognition, but without compromising the balance of the car through the remainder of the corner. The 48s have managed to survive 4 trackdays with a surprising acceptable wear rate. for the 48s on both road and track for me, but I guess I still need to try a set of CR500s... 14. Thanks, David. I'll bring a camera to Penn and keep an eye out for you then Ian 😬 1.6K SS Superlight #006 Penn Sevens Here
  15. Thanks Martin - that definitely sounds like it warrants further investigation! Any other suggestions (with or without photos) would be much appreciated. Ian 😬 1.6K SS Superlight #006 Penn Sevens Here
  16. A search of techtalk suggests that a number of people have rigged up dry sump belt-failure warning systems using microswitches/courtesy light switches. Does anybody have a photo of their switch location on a Caterham system which they would be prepared to share? Many thanks, Ian. Ian 😬 1.6K SS Superlight #006 Penn Sevens Here

  20. I recently switched from 185X60R13 A021Rs to A048Rs all round. After much delibaration, I eventually went for soft fronts and medium rears. It's safe to say that I am delighted with the results 😬 The car still feels well balanced but the frontend feels a lot more pointy and inspires considerably more confidence on turn-in. 21. Well in case anyone is interested: After attending trackdays at Brands GP and Rockingham I am hugely impressed with 185X60X13 A048Rs all round on my 1.6K Superlight using Soft fronts and Medium rears . The car felt fantastic and the additional frontend grip inspired confidence to push hard. Oversteer and Understeer could still be provoked as required and the balance remained good. I was also extremely impressed with the performance on a (mildly) wet track where the A048Rs seemed more progressive than the A021Rs and reached a useful operating temperature far more easily. Last of all, I reckon I still have enough tread left for a couple more trackdays before they become too worn for road use! Ian 😬 1.6K SS Superlight #006 Penn Sevens Here
  22. Mine is a '97 as well. It originally came with a Ford input shaft and AP clutch. As a result of problems the gearbox was swapped by Caterham, but they only had a spare 6-speed with an input shaft suitable for a Rover clutch at the time. It soon went back to be swapped for a gearbox with a Ford input shaft and an AP clutch... Ian 😬 1.6K SS Superlight #006 Penn Sevens Here
  23. Mark, I have experienced standard Rover clutch and AP race clutch in my 1.6K Superlight (also a very long story). My overwhelming preference is for the AP race clutch despite the slightly heavier pedal effort. I found the action much more positive and the car far easier to launch quickly once I had grown accustomed to it's agressive nature. The Rover clutch did not work at all well on my car with reverse being very difficult to select when hot. Ian 😬 1.6K SS Superlight #006 Penn Sevens Here
  24. Thanks for all the views. I think I'm going to give the soft front / medium rear A048Rs a try as per ChocolateTelevision's setup. ACB10s are tempting, but I don't want the hassle of camber changes when switching between road/track tyres and I don't want to compromise wet weather performance *that* much! Ian 😬 1.6K SS Superlight #006 Penn Sevens Here
  25. Dave, thanks for your reply. Just to clarify: I plan to go from a current setup of 4 185X60R13 A021Rs to 4 185X60R13 A048Rs so there would be no width change front or rear. The only change in balance I am expecting would be reduced understeer by fitting a softer compound on the fronts than the rears. Am I to understand that you currently run wider rears than fronts? I guess it might not be such a good idea to mix compunds if I am using the same width tyres at both ends... Ian 😬 1.6K SS Superlight #006 Penn Sevens Here
