  1. Just spotted over the barrier - one yellow and one green yellow stripe - Paul ?? and Peter ??? just a guess - if so an early return home ?? No playing for me - taking out the Mother in Law, daveR
  2. My car used to do this on a very regular basis then Paul Richards our Lancs area organiser came up and fitted a relay in the circuit and it's never done it again. That was eight years ago and never once has it happened since. Give Paul a ring if you need some advice on this mod. cheers, daveR.
  3. Thanks Tony - I dont think I would want to lose the original block from the car - the budget is flexible 😬 - I have had a look at DVA's site and there appear to be some options there, many kind regards, daveR.
  4. Many thanks everyone for your advice - sorry not to have been back earlier but something urgent came up. I did not realise the bosses were under the skins - does this apply to the bosses for the side protection bars and do caged do a curved curly bar roadsport version, had a look on their website but it's a but sparce at present, again many thanks, - best wishes daveR.
  5. Dear All, Having no engine expertise I wonder if I could ask your learned opinions. I was beginning to consider moving up to a s/hand R400 even though this would not be easy due to my world of finance at present. Then I wondered what might be a reasonable upgrade for my 1600 K series Superlight to bring it from the 140bhp bracket up to something more in the Superlight R bracket. I would not want to venture into the world of unreliability in quest of the extra BHP or go to an extreme where much of the cars originality is lost. Also can anyone advise me what is involved having a full cage fitted to the car - ie - do mounting lugs have to be welded on and thus the side skins have to come off for the job. I know there are quite a few types of cages - the ones I like the look of fit closely to the screen at the top some are more sloped back - can you tell me the name of the type that is more vertical at the front - I know there was an article in LF some time ago but I'm still trying to find it. If these can not be self fitted who is the man for the job ? Many thanks for any replies - I realise the engine question could take people all night so just a very brief outline would be great. Kind regards, daveR.
  6. Dear All, I posted this the other day, ’ve just taken the car for the test and it’s failed the emission test. The car is a 1999 Superlight with a standard 1600 Supersport K series. 26000 miles. I’ve had the car ten years and it’s always passed the emissions until last year when just prior to the test we changed the timing belt. At the same time the guys put their dial gauges on the engine and said the inlet valve timing was out and reset by one tooth which then made it spot on (which I am sure was correct as the club members that did it for me know their stuff) The car then ran great, tick over was lumpy which I was told would be the case, and a wiff of fuel on tickover. Took it for the test and it failed emissions completely. The tester said change the lambda sensor which I did and it the passed no problem. This year it’s got the tickover fuel wiff again and it’s failed the emissions just like last year. As I am a complete numpty on engine stuff I wonder if anyone could point me in the right direction. I could always change the sensor again and see if it passes but it seems a bit coincidental if it’s broken another why would that happen ? I have booked it into a guy with some diagnostic gear for Monday AM to see if he can plug into it so if anyone could give me some idea of the ECU settings he should be looking for that would be really helpful. Sorry if I’m making this sound easier than it is – I’ve no idea with all these electronics – bring back carbs and some points say I (NOT). The cat should be fine as I only put it on for the test then take it straight off again !! It’s probably only done ten miles. Apart from this the car always runs great and I always get approx 40 to the gallon even when pushing along. The UPDATE is I think the problem is solved- I took the car to a local guy with diagnostics and he plugged his gear in and said the inlet manifold vacum was very low on tickover whic was affecting the ECU. The Lambda and oxygen sensor were working fine. He said this could easily be caused by moving the inlet timing as described above so we took the belt off and moved it back one tooth and hey presto - reading now spot on. Taking for re-test tomorrow. How did it pass last year - urrm good question. Anyway if you live in the North Manchester area and need a diagnostic guy He's called John Smithson in Haslingden on Hud Rake Road and he was really helpful and had the gear. Many thanks for the replies, daveR.
  7. Many thanks Ivaan - I think this is probably the root cause but sadly no verniers so not quite that easy for me. Been out today and the car goes like stink and still great on the gas - I've always reckoned about 40 + to the gallon.
  8. Thanks for the replies chaps, No - No verniers and I ran the engine for a good quarter of an hour on the ramp at the test bay - The engine was singing like a kettle - it was all really really hot - Dave - you helped me the time before - after we changed the belt the engine sometimes stalled on overrun amd you gave me a fix Edited by - Dave Rothwell on 22 Jul 2011 18:56:23
