  1. It should never be too thin, it's just the welder & equipment aren't good enough 🤣 I can't remember if the bonnet is 1.2 or 1.5mm Ali. This is easily weldable by someone with ability (ie not me). Will ruin the paint - hopefully that's obvious. If you need a short term fix that could turn long term there is the aluminum "braze" that you see sold in the shows. I'm not personally convinced as to it's structural strength.
  2. This company is still making Sierra drive shafts. The cans are slightly larger than what Ford used. I've just no idea what they are - I assume they're from another vehicle & I once heard (with no evidence) VW. So it's possible to keep them on the road if we can find the can (and it fits) or persuade this company to make us some. https://www.jandrcvjoints.co.uk/ford-sierra-1.8-petrol-1992/catalogue/drive-shafts-509
  3. Officially the cans aren't reusable. The official way to get them off is to cut them. Then you buy the now unobtainable replacement part from ford that includes a can. Technically you can peal the can off the drive shaft and then re peen the end over once done. How successful you'll be I've no idea. I've heard of people using an air tool to stretch the now standard replacement CV boot over the can - like this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/314378689182
  4. We'll it's seems God loves a trier - just not very much. Cause I've tried lots of times to get into the car gracefully with the hood up....... And I've not succeeded once, but I've been rewarded by the almighty as I can now get into the car in about 30 seconds........ Once I've remembered what the first move is to getting in the car (guess he's not that generous) As long as I don't have a passenger, of course, which is fine ....... because my wife has so far refused to go in the car & after the debacle of trying to get in with the hood up she's even more certain she doesn't want to go for a ride. However there are side effects. I'm not a kid, all my joints work, I do bend, just not very easily or quickly. Is it just me that's literally out of breath with the contortions to resist gravity and climb out of the blasted thing when the hood is up? Being a fraction over Collins ideal size I also sit on the floor and am quite happy. Until tonight, to see out of the side screens due to the hood partially covering them I need to duck my head, which very quickly starts to give me neck ache. This car is literally a pain - still love it Oh, passed the mot but the tester did point out drops of coolant around the front of the engine God giveth, God taketh away ☹️
  5. This is on a wet sump K Series - so potentially a little high but also in the ball park for normal based on the Sigma comment above so stop wondering and start worrying about the MOT 😄
  6. Appreciate that's "normal", but on my roadsport I can't adjust the springs so i was wondering if my height is "normal" for 14" wheels or if it indicates something is amiss? On the bright side, i should have no issue getting onto the brake rollers this evening for the MOT.
  7. What is the normal ride height for a 7 on 14" wheels. I had a look last night and with non adjustable shocks I've got over 90mm (70mm + 18mm planks and a bit of a gap) under the sump.
  8. J&r driveshafts in somewhere in or near Birmingham do new Sierra drive shafts (or did a couple of years ago). The can they use is slightly larger than the original Sierra. No idea what that's from but wish I knew.
  9. I am local (Burbage) and really should pop round. Thank God my steering wheel is also detachable, I often leave it on when climbing in normally but last night that would have resulted in a hospital trip & more hilarity for the family. I don't have a lowered floor and I'm very keen to see the difference, however I'm surviving sitting on the floor so it's not top of the essential shopping list currently. A half hood was on the "that's interesting" list and is rapidly moving it's way up to the "essential" list after last night. Although being northern I'm struggling with the cost for "a bit of fabric". Re straps, I just don't seem able to tighten them at all once the hood is up. I'm concerned the plastic bracket is going to break.I can only move them if I push the fabric through then pull it tight, impossible in situ.
  10. Nb I'm 6'3"and sit on a small bit of foam so I fit in the caterham s3. This will become relevant later. Got the mot booked for Friday, then looked at the weather forecast. I figured I need to try the wet weather gear I got with my car & investigate snorkels and life vests. One thing at once, full hood first. Since purchasing I've changed the standard roll bar to an fia bar (2002 car with 2002ish fia bar). Having watched the turn 7 video I loosened the fabric straps so the hoops straddles the roll bar. I can with difficulty get all but two poppers fitted at the rear corners. I figure this is good enough for a 20 minute drive in the biblical floods forecast. By difficulty I mean my thumb is now bleeding by the nail for some reason. Do you need all of them fastened? I can not, no matter what I try tighten the fabric straps adjuster. Figured we should see what this means in practical terms so I spent 20 minutes trying to climb into the car. My family even came to watch it was that entertaining. At one point I even had a stool I was trying to half sit on whilst climbing in. My now ex daughter showed me how it should be done in 20 seconds. She's not 6'3" and it's currently unlikely she'll see 5'4". I eventually found a way by doing something ridiculous, from the driver's side, pulling my upper half onto the passenger seat with legs sticking out the driver's side, then lifting my legs into the driving position, then moving my torso back to the driving position. Is their an easier way for the excessively tall? Yes I'm in, but my head and the hoop are arguing over who had right of way. Do you need the hoops? My max speed will be 50mph, possibly less but I'm hoping the 14" avon zt7 tyres work in the wet. After deciding this is an abject failure I thought of trying the tonneau cover. It fits over the passenger side. How do you secure the doors? How do you view the temperature gauge? Currently hiding in the garage to avoid more Mickey taking by my "family". Still think the caterham is better than the bmw mini I also don't fit in. (Whoever took the bet with their colleagues on who could make the most ridiculous wet weather gear design, congratulations I hope you're happy having won that wager.)
  11. Decided to make something of the weather so went for a little drive yesterday lunch time. Waved at a fellow Orange Caterham going the opposite way through Sharnford in south Leicestershire. Then whilst being dad taxi in the evening saw / overtook on the M69 southbound a Caterham with rollcage, areo screen and the reg R300??? who was driving with an Exige. Don't think I've ever seen two random Caterhams on the same day before.
  12. Perhaps its me, but that looks like it fits once you have the spacer under it to lift it above the IVA edge trim. If you start trimming the rear of the bracket (windscreen side) be aware the outside walls on a 3d print are usually very thin - perhaps 0.5 to 1mm. Inside a 3d print you 'fill' the structure with a pattern and set the percentage of fill you require to make up the strength. Its often 20% fill so 80% space, its very rarely solid. Just want you to be aware so you're not surprised when you "break through" to the inside.
  13. Don't destroy the can - you can't get them any more (unless someone knows of some stock hidden away)
  14. No, but I'll search now. I find a few presses "sorts it out". I keep meaning to try contact cleaner prior to replacing. Will look up the thread now. Looking at the wiring diagram, a dodgy ignition switch in position 2 looks like a good candidate for my problem.
  15. Cuts suddenly, no warning hence I think wiring and not a failing coil etc. The fact it's after a while makes me wonder about heat which will be hard to diagnose. Got a USB endoscope - hadn't thought of that. Got one with 5m of cable, hopefully enough 😀 Gauges die - good point, need to work out what circuit is what. I've got the wiring diagrams. Interestingly afterwards the indicators didn't work, but the hazard switch is a bit flakey. Although if my memory is correct I realized I had the dog light on, turned it off and they worked. Immobilizer is disabled (ECU has a k maps map) Just wish it hadn't happened on the a5 in a fast section going up a hill. I couldn't really stop and have a thoughtful play.
  16. Thread hijack time - on my new to me 51 plate 1.6SS I've had the car cut out three times. Twice whilst doing medium acceleration (3/4 throttle) and once whilst slowing for a junction. This seems to be after about 30 to 45 minutes driving. In all cases the car doesn't seem to want to restart, but will happily spin the starter or light up the hazards. If i switch off the ignition it then restarts after a few seconds of the starter spinning. Reading the above it sounds like the battery master switch (retro fitted, not sure its FIA) and hidden starter button may be prime suspect. Is their a simple way to remove the dash to check this out?
  17. I've seen comments about the light output on some being very poor. I'd hope with the more expensive lights you're getting a better product and not a cheap copy that doesn't work. I've also seen reference to the light output being too high - something like above 2500 lumens you need self levelling and a number of lights claim 3,4 or 5k lumens. (i'm still with candles and thinking about the upgrade along with the lowered headlights)
  18. Photo doesn't work. I'd be interested but the wife would kill me - I need to sell about 12 (non Caterham) wheels before I can buy any more without a divorce 😞
  19. You may be insured to drive (which I find VERY strange) but you're not legally ALLOWED to drive. You don't have an MOT. You can only drive without an MOT to an MOT centre (of which the IVA test centre counts in this case as an MOT centre as you then get a 2 year MOT exemption). The Caterham Silverstone site doesn't count ..... unless they're a registered MOT centre and you're booked in for an MOT. However if they then give you an MOT this causes the system to insist you need a new MOT every year despite the IVA meaning you don't need one.
  20. Instinctively I'd go down so if one but fell off the bolt would still be doing something to stop any twist on the bracket. I've not done iva but wouldn't expect it would make much difference to them if it's up or down as long as the nuts are nyloc. Practically, how easy will it be to get a spanner or socket on a nut if you go upwards with the bolt?
  21. Looks like we've got the same brackets
  22. What is the 'old style mounting'. I've got a 2001 Caterham. Would love them but don't want to repeat your mistake.
  23. I've only ever requested a quote and replied to questions via email. That has been ridiculously quick - however I believe its one person so if they're busy you'll have to wait.
