  1. err work on the car change suspension settings etc BUT very riskyon that jack ❗ 'Can you hear me running' ......... OH YES and its music to my ears 😬 😬 😬 1988 200 bhp, 146 ft lbs, 1700cc Cosworth BD? engineered by Roger King, on Weber's with Brooklands and Clamshell wings, Freestyle Motorsport suspension.
  2. Gosh how did I miss this thread Have little to add other than its a lot easier with the box left in place. IF you have an ignition dizzy wheel on the crank pulley you will need to remove it. Do not do as I have done and refit it back to front 😳 Before you start set up the engine so that No1 is at TDC on the compression stroke and note where the mising tooth is located Have fun still I not sure if you have already done it 🤔 'Can you hear me running' ......... 3. This shows you where mine is same place as Jack Flash here and here (ignore mark on the wing its not really there)the wasted spark coil sits on the old brakets from James Whiting's battery mount only I have removed the battery tray and put a plate in for the wasted spark coil. The photo's are a bit old and a few bits look different now 'Can you hear me running' ......... 4. James Whiting use to do a kit to sit the battery above the bellhousing its not on his site anymore but might be worth a ring. Worked a treat now mine has a bit Freedom battery where the heater use to be ❗ If he does not do them anymore you could make one yourself fairly easily, but maybe I should wait before telling you how till you check James does not sell them anymore. Sticking throttle

Jan If you have two throttle springs check they are not hitting each other and have the same tension. Should not need any lubricate. You could have the start of a bit of wear in the cable take it out and check it moves freely. Have a look at the stop for the throttle arm on rhe carbs they wear and become pitted but that normally causes a varying idle still that might be seen as sticking. Top Tip... Roger King soldered 🤔 a shim to mine as it was worn. 'Can you hear me running' ......... 6. wonkycustard Think you will find the diameter of a 185/60R14 is almost identical to 205/60/13" here That was rather unexpected when I made that change ❗ Not sure its true with Toyo R888's 'Can you hear me running' ......... 7. An old sockets a lot cheaper ❗ I would still warm it up a tad first if I was you 'Can you hear me running' ......... 8. My solution was the same as Peter's but some 8 years on it needs doing again but its not as bad ❗ Once they start to rattle they are constantly hammered and they are hot so you start to get a flat side I just heated it up and used the wrong end of a socket to swage it out and a hammer 😬 Make sure the socket does not get stuck, mine did just let it cool heat the tube again to expand it and the cooler socket comes out.... worked for me 'Can you hear me running' ......... 9. Well since it always passes I never moan but I will if it ever fails. 😬 Normally they get a very good reading anyway and it would be nice to know if that ever changes. 10. Well I keep loosing my grease nipples since Roger breathed on the engine 😬 Even a dab of locktight will not keep them in ❗ Still I bought a new prop err a year ago but I have not found the time to fit it.... rather it was going in when I changed the diff ratio but that's been put off. 11. The garage that does my MOT often moans about that and I am on carbs they just bring the idle up a tad to get a reading. They never seam to work out its the primaries leaking at the joints ❗ They always get a reading if I have re-jointed the primaries to the 4 to 1 collection box Might be your problem as well 🤔 If the cars been laid up over winter and its not been out then the hydro Carbon reading are high but acceptable. 12. Hi anthonym Well I ahs assumed BHG gear clusters were very similar to Quaife but look here I see they are not ❗ Theres a bigger difference between 1st and 2nd. This does make the rev drop more but enables you to pull away at a lower rpm. You do need to play with the gear calculators its the only way to see the differences. I find the 2.2 1st is fine with the lightweight 7n and can just about hit about 60mph 1st makes a great 0-60 time Still thats only part of the story as you may want to change well before max rev if the backs going light then your much lower in the rev band and less power the sames true in all gears. The rear calculators are not perfect as they do not allow you to put in BHP/rev other than at max. Also tyre diameter is part of the overall gearing are you running 13" rims 🤔 Interestingly my AO48 225/60/13 have about the same overall rolling diameter as the old pilot 185/60/14 rims ❗ So what are your tyres and gear cluster ratios 🤔 You also have to think in all of this there is driver preference and what you like I might hate that does not make either of us wrong 'Can you hear me running' ......... OH YES and its music to my ears 😬 😬 😬 1988 200 bhp, 146 ft lbs, 1700cc Cosworth BD? engineered by Roger King, on Weber's with Brooklands and Clamshell wings, Freestyle Motorsport suspension.
  13. OH yes but......... Well when I bought my Ivin flying jacket I tried on the matching sheepskin pilots helmet... the wife pinched me cheek and said “who’s a cheeky chappy” then fell about with laughter when said so it does not suite me…. I tried on the leather one by then she had the lady assistant laughing ...we left with just the jacket and SHMBO saying I wished we had brought a camera. Having said that it/they are good idea… if...... 'Can you hear me running' ......... 14. anthonym Your what is your BHP and at what RPM 🤔 Elie My engine is not too steep until 70 BHP at 3900rpm then steep but still only 119 BHP @4900 rpm and by 5500 its near 143 BHP then slows down a bit hitting 200BHP at 7750rpm with the limiter at 8200rpm. So on the track you need to be always at least between 5300 and 5500 rpm out of a corner. That is not as easy as it sounds noticeably a bit dead in the water out of the hairpin before the straight at Curborough changing up drops you down to say 4000rpm and around 70 BHP or worse. anthonym does this sound like your problem 🤔 Changing to a 4.44 from 3.92 with my CR box lower would you speed by 10 MPH for the same RPM so for the same speed you’re 700ish RPM higher in the rev band or better as gear calculators can be very misleading and my rears are 225 x 60 x 13 Have a look on Arnie Webb site it has a better gear calculator than the Quaife one ❗ that only gives speed and RPM rather as max in each gear. Remember its ONLY theory of gears rather than the reality of a car on a road also note that it assumes just 200 rpm on a change that’s a bit low in my opinion so set your change 200rpm above your max power rpm. 15. anthonym My BD is peaky and I have already changed to a quaife close ratio 5 speed. I thought about a Caterham 6 speed but its rather set up for a 3.62 and that leaves me back where I started. Currently its fine on the road but not all I want on the track. I was going to change to a 4.44 diff but after the problem with my feet I never did it. I would loose top end but the power would be more usable on track and sprint days as I would always be much higher in the rev band for the same speed. the downside is motorways would become a bit of a pain on the ear. I would say 3 different rolling roads have recommended either a 4.44 or a 4.11 diff. I have the following gear ratios 2.2 1.54 1.21 1.1 0.93 if I change to a 4.44 I would prefer a 2.04 1st gear but that is an expensive modification as the gears on the main shaft. here If you have loads of money the is interesting here with 2.4 1.694 1.333 1.15 1.1 0.888 and retain the 3.92 diff 🤔. I have not played with the gear ratio programs in case I get too tempted 'Can you hear me running' ......... 16. I think that Brooklands give better wind protection than the areoscreen and no buffering thats to say windy but not the same effect as wind round the side of the mainscreen buffering with the air over the top 'Can you hear me running' ......... 17. Cheers Peter and also Dave So am back to looking for another solution, would you go for pre -engauged 🤔 'Can you hear me running' ......... 18. Hi Dave Well this is the pressure plate here I do not think it matches either of your descriptions more just straight fingers. I need to get me head round the pivot comment Peter well I as I said I need to find time to ring both AP and Burton it’s a while ago but I did and ended up with this solution. I think AP had no comment but it’s now a while ago. I will update you when I spoken to them, bit to busy at work at present but thank you for the comments 'Can you hear me running' ......... 19. Hi Peter Well I have not had a chance to phone AP but I found the assembly drawing tonight here and here This states So it should not be pre-engaged or loaded or at least those bearing should not be. The recommended release bearings are CP3457-2 CP3457-10 and CP3457-6 here that drawing seems to show it should be a flat face bearing and not the round faced one I have fitted OH Bu88er that means engine out again I have fitted the HD3259 with the RD315 carrier here Oh I was wrong about the number of plates here I just forgot That bearing has a round face bore 38.25mm, od 68.5mm, depth 15.75mm. the alternative HD 3260 is also round faced. However, the CP3457 range has a different bores 32.75, 34.998 and 39.998 so they will not fit on the Burton carrier that every one had been using ❗ In fact even if they were the same diameter I not sure they are suitable for the carrier, I would need to see one. Ah upgrading is so easy ☹️think both AP and Burton need a phone call but I did that err 2 years ago 'Can you hear me running' ......... 20. Good point Peter think I need another chat with AP, I did ring them to discuss the Burton bearing but its worth another go. Maybe the Caterham ones left slight wear although that's only say 100 miles now thats currently being corrected with use or the reply was wrong whatever....... let you know what they say. 21. Hi Peter Thank you for the reply. I see your point but think its not the problem in my case as the new ones the same diameter as the old one. Also it should be better as its a round face bearing and therefore will give a smaller better contact area. I will try it pre-engauged again although that did not work before its worth another go as it could be the splines on the friction plates are sticking and may have become looser with a little use. 23. Hi Peter Could you pleeeease expand that a tad for me as as ever k80rum hope you do not think this is a thread highjack as it is related to your posting I am why my clutch is now harsh with the new CRB but was smooth with the old one. I should point out I not tried to change anything since its last outing and currently its not pre-engaged. The pedal current moves say 15mm and in half way and I do not think the pedal overly heavy but......I am not the smallest of Bilbo's 'Can you hear me running' ......... OH YES and its music to my ears 😬 😬 😬 1988 200 bhp, 146 ft lbs, 1700cc Cosworth BD? engineered by Roger King, on Weber's with Brooklands and Clamshell wings, Freestyle Motorsport suspension.
  24. Gambo That’s a good description of what I am currently suffering but it is a AP 7.5” with 6 paddle twin plate. This only started after adding the Burton CRB it was fine with the Caterham one err till it fell off the arm whilst re-setting the number of spacer washers needed between the external slave and the bellhousing. The Burton CRB is deeper than the Caterham with its mounting and needs no spacer washers. Current thoughts are too much lateral movement in the arm so try to fit a bracket to the slave. If that fails then take the engine out yet again and inspect the clutch (groan). Arnie amongst others successfully uses the external slave but he has a Quartermaster 5.5” twin plate. Interestingly the image of the 5.5” has a 4 item sandwich of pressure plate then plate/friction/plate/ fiction then flywheel mine is only 3 items sandwich of pressure plate then friction/plate/friction then flywheel. I would be really reluctant to so for an internal slave but…………. 'Can you hear me running' ......... 25. Well mine covered nil miles last year 😔 In the first 18 months it covered 22,000 miles…….. some recent years have been about 2000 miles. It went from drive every day to my fun car I have bought a Midget err 3+ decades ago that had covered a lot less than that per year and was 5 years old put on another 70k in 4 years. Other than a lot of the suspension rubbers need changing when I bought it and the slightly worn king pins were changed. Then I did not spend any money on it for 3 years other than serviceable item such as tyres, oil etc later a bit of upgrading Then again with tin tops I have bought an SDI with 2.5K miles a year, a Jaguar 5k a year and Mercedes with 3.5k a year but all were 3 years old with one owner and one main dealer records.
