  1. Cheers Paul. I see the original spring in the blog post is no longer supplied by Caterham but should be some alternatives out there. There was a slight squeak of the clutch pedal at the point when the smell was bad, so could be looking at a clutch release bearing needing replacing. Not sure how much a new friction plate is but if the CRB needs doing then might as well get both sorted
  2. There's definitely slack on the cable from the way things sound and the pedal feel. I suppose one other thing is there is quite a bit of transmission noise in neutral with the clutch lifted, I always assumed this is just typical of sitting alongside the gearbox with no sound insulation. I'll take a look at John Vines thread for the extra preload spring. I'd imagine that should be a simple job.
  3. Haha that would be a much preferred problem to solve. The smell definitely resembled a clutch friction plate rather than a kipper unfortunately!
  4. Thanks everyone for the notes on the dragging brakes. Quick look around the discs with the wheels on and there's no apparent markings I'd say are in line with a sticky caliper that's been dragging for that distance. However, setting off in 3rd gear with no accelerator pressure on a very slight incline is relatively easy for the car, slight dip of engine speed but nothing massive. This is a 6 speed though so does the same still apply with the shorter ratios? Next question will be anybody recommended in Cheshire area other than Oakmere? I'd go to Track V Road but getting there during the week could be difficult and am booked in at Three Sisters track day first week of July
  5. Thanks Paul, I'll try tomorrow when we get some dry weather again up here. I assume it should stall no matter how much I put on the accelerator? Good thinking with the brake piston. Only thing against that is when I had a brief stop on the hard shoulder around Bolton I didn't spot anything from any brakes. My last experience of a seized caliper at that speed was quite a lot of smoke and squeaking when stopping. Still will check them for any obvious signs that any of them are seized. I think it would be the rears if any so might try winding the pistons back a touch anyway.
  6. Hi All, Driving back to Manchester from the Lake District and noticed a strong clutch burn smell initially when driving below 50mph on an A road then again even stronger once we got to the other end of the motorway in slow/ stop start traffic. There aren't any symptoms of the clutch slipping as far as I can tell. I did have the roof on which I know exaggerates smells but this was no throttle acceleration from lights and a steady 60mph all the way on the motorway. The car was running a little hot, the temperature gauge pushing 90 once sat in traffic. I do have a rattly clutch cable which seems slightly slack as the rattle goes once a tiny bit of pressure is applied. It has been like this for at least 3 years now though and never had so much clutch burn smell. Is the car so light that there's no noticeable clutch slip at the point it needs replacing and I need to sort it? If so does anyone have a rough idea of costs for such a job? Cheers in advance

    Daily Runabout

As per title, looking for a new daily. Ideally up to around £10k, up to 60k miles on the clock and a petrol. Considering cars such as Seat Leon estate but interested to know if anyone in the club is moving a car around this price range on? Thanks
  8. It should just be a 30 mile round trip to the office but there'll be a once a week trip up to the Lakes with the new role which is around 280 miles. Also travel up that way family visiting. I'm thinking something Ford Focus sized or bigger but happy to consider others.
  9. I'm in the process of moving jobs which means losing my company car. Seems like I'm doing this at the worst time possible looking at car availability and prices. Is anyone looking at moving a daily on? Budget of up to around £8k but could stretch to £10k. I'm in Manchester but don't mind travelling for a good car.
  10. I was out that way yesterday evening but I stayed on the southern side of the bridge so not sure if it was me. 12p wayyy too expensive!
  11. We've just missed the really hot weather down here but doing a bit of walking for a couple of days so not complaining too much.Hope you're managing to enjoy the better weather today!
  12. Heading up from the Lidl to the high street. Was a surprise to see someone out down here in the rain!
  13. Looking to replace my battery, currently got a Shield open lead acid which after a fluid top up and charge is still struggling to get the Caterham started. The car lives under a car port with no way to charge it but the battery comes off for winter time. Seems to be 3 options I'm looking at: Standard banner Ultramax LIFEPO4 22Ah Powerlite PS-12 Above is in ascending order of cost, anyone any recommendations from experience of these? Thanks
  14. A bit of a long shot but if PROBE2 has a change of heart I'll take the aeroscreen or seat pads
  15. I have £435 of Currys PC World E-Vouchers available for £405. I purchased these through my employer initiative to put towards a new PC graphics card, which I didn't realise there is a UK wide shortage of before I bought them. Vouchers can be used online or in-store (though any purchase at the moment must be made online through click and collect due to UK restrictions). Purchased for £405 so looking to just get this back. Potentially a useful £30 saving if you're spending this much or more with them. Vouchers valid until January 2023. Transfer of vouchers by email.
  16. My mum's getting a new car and so her old one is available if anyone is interested before it gets traded in. The dealer has offered £3k so if someone is willing to match that they can have it. It's a 2011 Fiat 500 0.9 Twinair sport in black. 45k miles on the clock but being used daily for her 20 mile commute so slowly going up. The car has bluetooth, AC, front fog lights, alloy wheels. Comes with a full service history (local independent), would come with 12 months MOT. 1 owner from new (she bought it unregistered). The car will be available from the middle of December so could be a good Christmas present? Car is in Cumbria but could get it to Manchester if anyone is interested. I can email pictures (file sizes are too large to upload to the system here).
  17. Ah you caught me on the missing detail of size, it's for an S3 unfortunately! Thanks for the offer though
  18. Does anyone have a good condition black surround heated windscreen? I currently have a chrome surround screen in good condition which I'd be happy to swap. Only looking to swap as the rest of the car is has black pack or carbon fibre parts.
  19. My nearest is Ninemeister in Warrington, finally an excuse to go there and take a look at the Porsche restomods they do! Cheers for the help
  20. Brilliant, thanks everyone. I recently replaced the steering gaiters and didn't notice any play in the TRE, will have a check for play in the bearings. The wheel weights are all grouped, but still think it's probably worth me getting the wheel balancing checked. Not heard of force road balancing, is it something the garage would advertise?
  21. The steering wheel on my car shakes at anything over 60mph, increasing with speed and also can be worse depending on road conditions and whether I'm going up or down hill. Could it be as simple as the wheels needing rebalancing? When I changed the tyres 3 years ago the garage had a struggle balancing due to the weight of the new tyre (Nankang NS2R) and also didn't seem to believe me about running tyres at 18-20psi. I've also not changed the suspension bushes in the time I've owned the car, should this be done more regularly? I've had the car 4 years. Thanks for any ideas
  22. I think the same car was spotted by my girlfriend this evening on the M56 heading towards Manchester. Numberplate NX19. She tried to keep up but her slightly underpowered Suzuki SX4 only kept up enough to read the first half of the plate. Sounds like a nice long day out in North Wales!
  23. Hi Malcolm, Unfortunately just put mine away for winter storage with family in the North East, I'm in Manchester so your place would be much more ideal. I'll bear in mind for next year though!
  24. Need to do some reading on the best way to refill avoiding airlocks. No heater installed so I'm hoping that makes things, but I've never replaced the coolant on a car before so should be fun!
  25. Thanks both. Seems to be as I suspected, one person with an issue and it comes up as an issue for everyone. Cheers Jonathan. I can find one of the discounts - assume the other 2 suppliers are not discounted..?
