    Ned's 160: finished!

Thanks, Simon. By the way, sorting through the bits left over (please tell me you had a few too...) I found a short strip of rubber trim (8" long or so), stiffened with a metal wire insert. Then it dawned on me... it's to fit around the edge of the air intake, making a seal with the side of the hood. Can't remember any mention of this in the Assembly Guide!

    Ned's 160: finished!

Finished (first ever use of a smiley, to celebrate) Blog here
  5. I've hunted along the loom, using a mirror, phone camera, and even put one of my kids in the footwell upside down to look for it (Derek's recommendation!). But I still haven't found what I'm looking for... For those 160 owners who managed to find the 12v connector, can you remember exactly where you found it? Was it tywrapped into the main loom behind the scuttle? Derek said it would be on the passenger side. On my travels, I've found an empty 3-pin Aces gearchange light connector (may come in useful one day, who knows) behind the ignition barrel, but everything else is already wired in. Also, once found, do you think it would be suitable for running not only a 12v fag light connector, but also a USB connector (I'm going to position it between the seats on the bulkhead). The current will be very low. Any help gratefully received... Ned
  6. Hi I just put in '1234', but that was the Bluetooth pairing code. The Torque app then immediately starting reading data. With the engine in 'II' position (but not running), the throttle position, air temp, air density, etc etc all showed up. I'm not exactly sure why I'm interested in the data... but it's nice to have all the same! Ned
  7. Great news, Mike! And yes, I'm up for a meet in August, definitely. My car is pretty much complete now. Everything runs nicely. I just have some little jobs to do (more cable ties...), and then will get the Premier Paint Guard done in some areas. PBC/IVA is booked for early-ish June... Should be on the road by end of June latest, all being well! Ned

    Ned's 160: engine start

Yeah, I found an old local tramp to help out!
  9. Hi Paul Do you have the IVA mirror mounts? I should have got some in my kit but... and Caterham are out of stock. All the best Ned
  10. Hi all For those of you with a 160, the OBD2 works perfectly. The port is tucked just by the driver's right knee. I bought a cheap OBD2 Bluetooth adapter from Amazon and downloaded Torque Pro from Android for my Samsung Galaxy. The two devices paired, and immediately I was getting live data from the ECU. The throttle position reads about 21% when 'idle', and doesn't reach 100% at full push. But I imagine I can tweak that somehow. Other than that, all the telemetry worked perfectly (air temp, mass air flow, boost etc etc). No manual set up by me needed at all. The app has a bewildering set of options to play with. It'll even do 0-60 automatically :-) Ned
  11. After resetting the immobiliser by disconnecting the battery, the car started on the first turn. Major relief! The radiator doesn't get warm, except in the top RH corner (inlet pipe). The temp dial rises, and the heater pumps out hot air. But the front radiator remained cool almost everywhere. I need to check this out tomorrow...
  12. Congratulations Martin! Great news. Ned
  13. And Mike, there is a lot of chatter on bigjimny on converting those rear brakes to discs... Might be a tempting winter project!
  14. Yes, mine is a bit hit and miss. When it arrived, I thought the key was jammed in the barrel. Sometimes it does get stuck. Apparently carbon powder is a good non-sticky lubricant, I've heard.
  15. My wiper fuse blew when I first tested the electrics. Talking to Derek, I mentioned that the wipers made a nasty grinding sound. He said they should just whirr quietly, but that he knew exactly what's happening to mine, and that I should mark it on the PBC, and that they should call Derek to get his guidance on how to fix it. Seems a bit of a long way round... But anyway, I will flag this at PBC, and then hopefully they can fix it. I replaced the 10A with a 15A fuse, and it didn't blow, despite the grinding noise. I assume it's some alignment problem in the worm gears... Too late to be of any help, Simon, but you might mention the 'call Derek' bit to the PBC people. Cheers Ned
  16. I looked in vain for the throttle cable when my 160 kit arrived. Then I realised it's an electronic one...
  17. I used sticky neoprene tape. Sticks like the proverbial to a blanket.
  18. Caterham 160s have a live axle borrowed (and modified) from the Suzuki Jimny. I hunted high and low for something the right diameter and shape to tap the axle oil seal in. It's a tight fit, and needs to be done without mashing up the rather delicate seal. Here's what I found in the garden shed: It's the finial off the top of an old garden table umbrella. Perfect diameter, and a lovely boss on the end, at which to aim my mallet. This may be a candidate for a 3D printed product. Group buy anyone?! By the way, if any 160 builder wants an alternative to Blatchat, there's Big Jimny forum My building blog here
  19. Many thanks, Peter I'm assuming that this goes in the 'spare bits of metal' box once the IVA is passed... Your passenger's knee would get a softer landing on the fuse box cover! All the best Ned PS Back end of the car now all sorted, thanks to the arrival of two poxyy little aluminum bush spacers
  20. You're right Peter! I'm not looking forward to the whole process! On a different note, how did you all figure out the fusebox cover? It's like some kind of puzzle, sent to test us, isn't it? I have no clue what to do with the damned thing... N
  21. That's really grim news, Martin. I'm very sorry to hear it. But you'll get there soon enough. (You're right about the pillar drill. Derek, of course, is sending me replacement spacers.) I look forward to seeing us all on the road soon, for that meet-up! Ned
  22. Hi Simon This has been really helpful, thanks! The knee trim panels are a pig to get into place, I find. I can't get them back enough to match the holes.. God knows what kind of scratching is going on out of site between the skins... I'll have another go today. My stainless sill tops look good though! All the best Ned
  23. Thanks, Martin. That's reassuring, at least! So, you opened up the metallastic bushes themselves, or turned down the spacer bushers? I was wondering about putting the two rogue bushers under a pillar drill and opening them up with a 12mm drill. It's less than 1mm either way, but it's a significant 1mm ! Thanks Ned
  24. Ah OK, understood thanks. Sorrry to hear the car didn't pass. I've seen other Caterham blogs where emissions failed. It's clearly Caterham's issue to sort out for you. My build has ground to a halt yet again, as I seem to have the wrong spacer bushes for the rear radius arms. Did you have problems with these? I'm hoping I don't have to grind them in with a vice... Ned
  25. So.. forgive the dumb question but... how are you able to drive it without the IVA pass?
