  1. Is there a master list of where parts come from? I've picked up some clues here and there (mostly on lights, and turbo things specific to the 160), but it would be very useful. Something for that Wiki... Ned
  2. Thanks to all. Today is D-Day. I picked a great day to drive to Crawley... N
  3. I joined a few (SW London covers a few I guess), but never received any mail, so unjoined again. Aside from flagging up of monthly meetings, what am I missing? Ned
  4. Yes, I've just been trawling YouTube. Under every 'how it's done' video, there are a dozen 'you're an idiot' comments. I'm going with soft straps around each wheel, with the winch attached at the front for good luck. And it will be a leisurely trip around the M25. The slow speed of the aged Defender will I hope be mitigated by lots of oohs and aahs at the beauty of my lovely car on the back!
  5. I'm just about to trailer my car down to CC in Crawley. My question is about securing the car to the trailer. How do Caterham owners usually do it? Attach to the unsprung parts (wheels or wishbones?), and allow the car to move on its suspension? Tyre straps? Or use the towing points? Any advice gratefully received. Ned
  6. Thanks for the info, Simon. The Speedhunters article is interesting - not sure what I think about the new tyres. I had assumed that the car was designed around the concept of narrow tyres with high walls. Although the manifold looks rather nice, I don't think it's worth it for 1/2hp, you're right... Even in combo with the exhaust, for another 1/2hp. Probably get just as much by cleaning the airfilter! All the best Ned
  7. Simon_H Interesting. So, do you think there's any more capability in the engine? I've seen crazy Japanese website where they've got 100+hp from the K6A engine. And on my first test drive, the CC sales guy did mention that there was rumours of an ECU remap at some point... Cheers Ned
  8. Sounds great, Mike! Though I didn't buy mine to race (that will be the next one...), I do quite fancy trying some autotesting in the 160. It's so nimble, but possibly the turning circle isn't agile enough to work properly. Lots of fun though. I've watched it many times at Brooklands, in cars ranging from stripped down Minis to glorious Bentleys and Frazer Nashers. Ned
  9. So jealous... Mine is still in the garage, completed. CC Crawley couldn't take it for PBC until next week. And VOSA haven't given me an IVA date yet (when I called them the woman said 'you'll just have to wait, there's a backlog'). Meanwhile the sun shines (well, not today at least) and the car languishes. Mind you, it's getting more shiny as the days pass. I waxed it yesterday - the first time I've ever waxed a car in my life! Also, I thoroughly recommened Autoglym vinyl and rubber care. The hood and boot cover are transformed - shiny and black not dull and grey. Ned

    Rear View Mirror

As soon as my IVA is done, I'm going chrome. My 160 is going to look like something off Quadrophenia.
  11. For fixing advice, I'd recommend Daniel's blog here. I did a very similar thing here, but I'm not as tidy as Daniel! Ned
  12. I used Plexus MA 300, which was recommended on one of the Big Head manufacturer/retail sites. But I should add that my car is still pre-PBC so hasn't been used in anger yet!

    Battery Leak

Did it come from the breather tube hole? I fitted a plastic pipe to take whatever vents (I was thinking gas rather than liquid) beneath the car and away... Ned
  14. I went a bit belt and braces. I fitted two plastic cable ties per Big Head (2 per stay), so there are 8 per wing altogether.
  15. Good to hear of the progress, Peter! Mine is sitting in the garage, awaiting pickup in a week or so for PBC etc. You're right about the carpet. I like the carpet supplied, but was surprised there wasn't a piece for the outside cockpit wall. Even without driving the car yet, I don't like the clanking of the harnesses against the wall! I wonder if Thundersports or somebody would make some up in the same material. Ned
  16. To go with my rather retro new 160, I'm on the hunt for some stainless/chrome mirrors. I think I'm going to go for mounts on the window stanchions. I'm thinking stainless bullet-style mirrors, but these are usually configured to be mounted 'flat' on the car body, rather than at 90deg to the mirror (if you see what I mean). Any examples/photos/suggestions very welcome. I'm also going to replace the windscreen mirror with something chrome too, I think. I'm a bit worried that I'm turning into a polisher... Ned
  17. I'd been warned that DVLA/VOSA/whatever were taking 5 weeks to turn around post IVA. Thank goodness that's wrong! All being well, my first weekend in the car will be 4 July...
  18. That is true. I think there are double ones available - I'll have a look online... E
  19. Thanks Jonathan The bit of loom in question is wired into the main fuse box, with a 10A fuse. I will test it, but I imagine it is always on - otherwise it's not going to be any use for charging. My Optimate puts out 0.8A on bulk charge. I plan to fit a 12v cig lighter under the scuttle (for charging phones and charging the car battery), and then a double USB socket between the seats on the rear bulkhead for GoPro/phone/etc (protected in the boot 'V' with a bit of shaped aluminium resembling the fuel pipe cover in the corner). Ned
  20. Thanks, Martin. I guess the male connector should be easy to find online. Best regards Ned
  21. Thanks to all, and especially to Mike for posting his photos. Eureka, I've found it. It could not have been more hidden. No wonder Caterham charge so much to fit it. It's worth £100 in osteopath's bills alone. Next question: has anyone used it in 'reverse', i.e. to charge the batttery? Ned

    Ned's 160: finished!

Thanks Martin! I was looking at exactly the same thing when I put the wings on. The piping covers half the hole, but the rest is open to the elements. I was thinking of using a blanking grommet too, with a healthy dollop of silicone sealant too. Ned
  23. Hi Simon All being well, I'll be there. I'm not sure of my sailing commitments this August, but a nice trip to Somerset sounds like a lot of fun to me! Ned

    Ned's 160: finished!

Thanks for the tips, Simon. PBC is booked for beginning of June, so it gives me some time to go over the car again. Ned
  25. That's really helpful, Mike! Many thanks. I will figure it out somehow... All the best Ned
