Pierre Gillet
I can confirm that we find here both Mobil 1 5W40 and 5W50, the 15W50 being more difficult to find. @ PC: the 1997 Caterham assembly guide was already specifying 5W50 for the Rover engine. Was the R500 already being developed at that time ? Pierre
Tony C
Can't remember if Fordy mentioned it, but it's worth remembering that in addition to lubrication, the oil also assists cooling (heat disipation) and cleaning (removing the by-products of combustion and teeny tiny bits of worn away metal. IMHO changing the engine oil at reasonable intervals is necessary for these secondary reasons too, probably more so than the lubricating properties are decreasing. Looking forward to the finished article Fordy - about time some of "The old wives tales" are put in perspective 😬 BRG Summertime Brooklands SV 😬 It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.
