RogerB
I dumped a large quantity oil from my gearbox yesterday with a sudden severe oil leak. On first investigation it appears to of come from the speedo cable drive oil seal. Is this a common fault and is it possible to replace this seal in situe? Member Jonathan Kay Posted August 27, 2022 Member Share Posted August 27, 2022 It's been seen before!Yes, it's possible to fit the components on both sides (oil seal and speedo drive gear) with the gearbox in place. You can improve the access by loosening the engine mounts and the gearbox mount and yanking the tail of the gearbox to the side.if you'd like an Assembly Guide and an exploded diagram of the gearbox please send me a Private Message with your email address. SM25T
Big pair of sliding joint pipe pliers will press cap into place on other side to speedo drive. Clean off recess and light smear of silicone sealant around new cap.

RogerB
Got her up on axle stands and yes the oil has come from the speedo drive. The cap on the opposite side to the seal is missing. So my initial plan is to source a new cap and fit as described by SM25T before attempting to replace the seal.Any suggestions on where to source the cap. I''ve emailed Red Line, but not sure which Type 9 gearbox I have, type A, B or C.Hopefully they are the same although don't look it in the exploded views.Roger. 7 wonders of the world
once the new cup is fitted use a 2mm drill and mke 2 holes thro the casing and edge of the cup and secure with lock wire, many a rally car has trashed a gearbox after having these vibrate out closely followed by the oilSteve @ SPC in Redditch will have new caps in stock too. RogerB
Thanks again guys. I'm just hoping I haven't wrecked my gearbox as it happened at the end of a long Croft track day. Blanking cap ordered and that's a great plan to use seizing wire to retain the cap.
Wrightpayne
FYI - I ordered one from Caterham and an engine type core plug was delivered. Turns out this is used when an electronic speedo is fitted and the gearbox drive is removed.
RogerB
Success, new cap and spindle seal fitted. The cap is now secured with seizing wire as suggested by Steve and sealed with Loctite silicone sealant. It was necessary to make a 44mm diam hole in the transmission tunnel to allow the cap to be drifted in with some force. It looks like I've been fortunate as it only required circa 600ml of gear oil to replenish and the gearbox has run fine today.

Wrightpayne
I managed to remove the cap and change the speedo drive (gearbox in car) without drilling any holes in the tunnel :-p
