Yellowish Mustardy Yoke Front Lower Wishbones/Upright link

Dear All,

I have noticed a dry yellowish mustardy yoke leak around the bolts at the junction of the front lower wishbones with the upright assembly, both sides of the car.

That is the spherical bearing in the lower wishbone. It is a pre lubricated bearing not needing the requirement for further lubrication.

I suggest cleaning off with any good brake & clutch cleaner then re inspect the area.

It's a pre-lubed spherical bearing but it's also in a small well that can remain damp and cause issues.

I had steering that had become vague so I started adding a drop of oil to the spherical bearings a few times through the year, it keeps the steering lighter and more consistent. Definitely worthwhile maintenance, although I was really surprised that the bearings getting tight could have such a profound effect on the steering feel!  This is the reason why I'm questioning whether it's white grease, although oil works better.

White grease will not invade the close tolerance between inner & outer bearing parts.  As mentioned above a light drop of thin machine oil or WD 40 once in a blue moon will keep things in good order.

It's a stainless/PTFE spherical bearing so normally wouldn't need lube and as you say, oiling can attract dust and cause wear. 

Having said that, if it regularly gets wet then that's not good either. 

I would say carefully drying if it does get wet, the occasional v light lube with a water dispersing oil, followed by drying off as much of the excess as you can could be a decent way to go. 

I have top rose joints as well so pay special attention to them.
