Removing Live Axle Bilsteins

Recommended Posts

Chassis is a 1995 xflow live axle, Bilsteins height adjustable shocks all round.

I'm removing all 4 shocks for a rebuild (Is a rebuild cost effective compared to new?). The alan bolt holding the top of the front shock to the chassis, is it a 3/8" alan key I require to remove the bolt? Also, to remove the adjustable platforms I require a 'C' spanner, are these spanner's all one size? Finally, will I require spring clamps to remove the springs?

Socket cap head bolt is possibly a replacement as original supply was hex head, or at least it was when I got mine, and commonly change to make fitting easier. It's a 1/2 x 4" UNF and will be a 3/8" Allen as you say.

C spanners are either 1.9 or 2.25" - it's the latter for coil over dampers.

Once you've lowered the platforms, all the tension is off the springs, and they are easy to remove, so no you don't need any spring compressors. It would be a good idea to measure the spring heights so when/if you get them back from refurbishment you'll have a ride height starting point.
