7SW Posted October 23, 2020 Posted October 23, 2020 Hello, I did a search in several posts but I'm a little bit lost.I just got a set of 6x13 and 8x13 ET24 R500 8 spoke wheels. They are currently fitted with CR500 but I would like to change them as, I need something versatile (lot of long tours and mountain roads); I do not plan to put the wheels onto a track (or very rarely). The sizes of these CR500 are: Front: 175/55R13 75v Rear: 205/55R13 85v I plan to get Avon ZZS tyres as I am satisfied with them on my current wheels (15'' 10 spoke).Going to Avon Tyres site, the only available size for 13'' wheels are: Front : 185/55R13 83W XL Rear: 215/55R13 88W or 245/50R13 93VIf, for the front, no choice is given; for the rear axle there are 2 possibilities. What could be the best setup 215/13 or 245/13?My Cat is a 1.6K SuperSport so, far under 200BHP ;)Thanks for your helpFred.
K7 VCT Posted October 23, 2020 Posted October 23, 2020 215 on the rear. The cr500 is a great tyre that's sadly missed.
Tazio Posted October 23, 2020 Posted October 23, 2020 At that power level why the big rears?, you car will be overtyred, and just pile on understeer, each to their own....
7 wonders of the world Posted October 23, 2020 Posted October 23, 2020 R888R 185/60/13 & 205/60/13 more than adequate for my stable of ponies.....for a stock 1.6 I would suggest 185's all round would offer a better balance to the car
StevehS3 Posted October 23, 2020 Posted October 23, 2020 #3 Just out of interest, why does the lower powered car 'pile on understeer' and not a higher powered car?
TomB Posted October 23, 2020 Posted October 23, 2020 I’ve got a set of SLR split rim wheels on my 150bhp Supersport. Cosmetic reasons only, they look fab! On the road, I’ve not noticed any tendency to understeer.
JonT Posted October 27, 2020 Posted October 27, 2020 re #5 I'd have thought it's more that there's no way a low power car to overwhelm the rear tyres under power, so you'll only ever get understeer. As others have suggested, at 135bhp I'd think a square setup (185 all round) would make more sense. As a bonus you can rotate the tyres to even up wear/life.
7SW Posted October 28, 2020 Author Posted October 28, 2020 Hello, Thanks for your comments.Fitting a 185/13 tyre onto a 8'' wide wheel is correct?
Wrightpayne Posted October 28, 2020 Posted October 28, 2020 Nooooo!! You don't want the stretched look. What everyone is suggesting is 6" rims and 185/60 tyres all round.A few years ago I posed the question about tyre widths and bhp - when do you need to go bigger on the back? The general consensus was 200bhp. Ian
