Octane rating for 1988 Super Sprint

A friend is collecting a 88SS next week and I was wondering what is the correct Octane rating, The car is an ex Japanese factory built car with 1.7 litre 10.5:1 comp. I figure at that comp level 98 is the correct rating only other option is 95

I can't see anything in the contemporaneous Assembly Guide.

I run 98 in mine auyt. He could try 95 but any suggestion of pinking (make sure he knows how to recognise the knocking noises!) and switch to 98 and don't labour the engine or rev it hard. I think too the engine will run cooler on 98? But a proper engineer can confirm if that's the case. Some fuels - eg BP - are 97. My opreference is Shell and the engine was mapped on that.

Worth carrying round a bottle of octane booster too as 98 isn't always easy to find everywhere, even in the UK.

I run my 1996 SuperSprint on 98 (or 97 and had a tankful of Tesco 99 (bizarre) fuel the other day).

My Crossflow prefers BP 97. Though 95 is fine if that’s all I can get.

Does it have hardened valve seats? If not I'd consider a lead replacement additive.

From memory all " Japanese " cars where to run on lead free but that involved only the ign timing, the valve seats where not hardened.

Thanks Guys luckily 98 is readily available from major Fuel companies. and Elie thanks for the insight about the valve seats, something to keep in mind. I will grab some valve saver.
