Grovewood
Hi, one of my rear wheel arches is damaged with a crack in the top section, what i like to know is whether i could get it repaired? (near Watford hert`s) they both need work ie fill & re paint, or would i be better off getting a new pair & fitting myself, Thanks in advance for any advise. Wrightpayne
Just be aware removing old wings can be problematic. The bolts can seize in the rivnuts in the side skin and spin.Ian
Mark w
I've seen them repaired with a layer of glass and resin on the underside , fill and repaint .Given the cost of painting is the same , If you can run to the cost of new ones i would do that . ( or find some good second hand ones ) .
Member Jonathan Kay Posted May 15, 2017 Member Share Posted May 15, 2017 Do you want them to look perfect?...I'd get quotes for: Repair and repainting those. Glass reinforced plastic ± painting. Carbon fibre reinforced plastic ± painting. And for 2 and 3 you'll probably be able to sell the old ones here and recoup a bit.Jonathan
elie boone
I wouldn't use glass repair on a Caterham wing,to repair a crack pull the gap a bit and insert Sikaflex, let it dry and cut the ecces off on the outside and finish off with fine puty and respray. aerobod - near CYYC
2 layers of fibre glass matting 30mm either side of the damage on the inside of the wing and resin in the crack and/or broken outside surface works fine for a repair, as long as the inside of the wing is well sanded. I repaired my left hand wing this way after breaking it in 5 places after hitting it with a cone thrown up by the front wheel at about 100km/h at an auto-X event. Didn't bother repainting, just got both wings wrapped in matt black after smoothing the repaired areas.
Alan Bowler
I have one to fix properly or replace. How easy is it to DIY wrap rear wings? Am thinking matt black.
aerobod - near CYYC
It requires a skilled wrap specialist due to the fairly tight curvature of the wing. Needs lots of heat and stretching of the wrap. The first one the specialist did for me had to be redone due to visible stretch marks, but after he got the hang of it, the second and redone one were done fairly quickly. Here is what it looks like:
