chrisbeddoe
Hi All, Just wondering how much oil other R500 D owners are burning through. I know its fairly common to top up a Duratec's oil but after 1500 miles and a track day I poured nearly 2 litres in this morning.Definitely no leaks, Is this normal?ThanksChris
L7 FST
I have a 260hp Duratec, which uses very little oil in road use but quite a lot when on track. One or two litres during an open pit lane day with lots of track time would be quite normal...
Dr Slotter
Normal R300 spec. here which hardly uses any oil on road or track.
Delbert
As per L 7 FST - my 279 bhp used 2 parts of F All on the road however on a good T Day the catch tank would have some as well if lots of fast corners

Mark w
ChrisNot an R500 but i have never had to put any extra oil in my 620R between annual services .It has done 6500 miles now , several track days a year .Looks like they are all different . aerobod - near CYYC
Standard 210bhp R400D here with 21,000km on the odometer. Uses about 1 litre of oil every 200km on the track when continually thrashed to the redline, 10 times less in spirited road use.
sjmmarsh
I have a CSR260 - it uses about 1/2 litre per 1000 miles, or 1 Litre on a normal track day. They are thirsty under load!Steve
chrisbeddoe
Thanks for the responses. Looks like it's not that out of the ordinary then. Just completed another 500miles and a track day so curious how far it's gone down. Had barely moved half way through the track day so seems fairly inconsistent. Thinking it maybe the motorway cruising at higher revs (6 speed box) which is eating up the oil.
Leadership Team Shortshift Posted August 15, 2016 Leadership Team Share Posted August 15, 2016 Just interested, Chris - assuming it's a dry sump, how are you measuring it so accurately (sufficient to say that it had 'barely moved half way through the track day')?James
chrisbeddoe
Hi James, yes its dry sump. I am just looking in the reservoir and seeing where it is against compared to the first baffle. Just a visual check really, not an accurate measure at all but can fairly quickly tell if its is gone down. I always check when the engine is hot too etc
Member Jonathan Kay Posted August 15, 2016 Member Share Posted August 15, 2016 What is it about track driving that makes the difference, please?ThanksJonathan
Leadership Team Shortshift Posted August 15, 2016 Leadership Team Share Posted August 15, 2016 Hi Chris - is that with the engine running or stationary?James
Oysterman
Hi just to resurrect this thread and going slightly off tangent, how is the level measured on a R500 D. ,looking into the tank I can see two holes through a baffle , the manual is a little confusing in its description of which one to check??? aerobod - near CYYC
If it is the triangular standard Duratec dry sump oil tank, the baffle approximately halfway down the tank has about a 40mm hole in it with a radius on the edge. When the engine is fully up to temperature and idling, the oil should reach the bottom of the radius, 5mm below the baffle surface.
chrisbeddoe
Just a quick one on this, The oil consumption seemed to be a one time only event. Have not had any issues since. Very strange, but not complaining. Maybe it was just user error!
Oysterman
Thank you ,yes standard triangular !
ScottR400D
My experience of the triangular tank is that they can drain back to the sump differently. When I used to measure the level cold engine off (as well as hot and hot engine off) it varied. Sometimes just below the baffle, sometimes above, sometimes just on it. I've taken to checking as soon as it's switched off, hot. It only takes a minute or two to remove hood and nose and the level is then about a centimetre over the baffle. It seems fairly consistent.I reckon that's about 7 litres and I get nothing coming into the catch tank. It didn't use any oil that you'd notice, even on track days, so far.
